In hypothesis testing, there are two classic ways things can go wrong:

• Type I error (false positive): You conclude that something is true when it actually isn’t.
In everyday terms: you detect a signal that isn’t there. In the image: telling a man, with full medical confidence, “You’re pregnant.”

• Type II error (false negative): You conclude that something is not true when it actually is.
You miss a real signal. In the image: telling a very pregnant woman, “You’re not pregnant.”

Statistics is essentially about balancing these two risks.
