In recent years, cockroach milk has gained buzz as a superfood due to its rich protein, carb, and fat content. This protein-rich, crystallized substance is produced by Diploptera punctata, the only cockroach species that gives birth to live offspring. The milk, in the form of protein crystals, nourishes its developing young. However, harvesting it is highly labor-intensive, requiring the killing of a lactating female and her embryos to extract the crystals from its midgut. According to a study co-author, mass production is currently infeasible. Despite this challenge, more research on cockroach milk is underway to better understand its potential benefits and production methods.
