Fortifying the Nation

In one of Nepal’s largest reported cyber heists, hackers have stolen Rs 3.42 crore from F1Soft International’s account at Citizens Bank International. F1Soft, the parent company behind Nepal’s leading digital payment platforms, eSewa and fonepay, uncovered the theft two months after it occurred, prompting an extensive investigation by the Cyber Bureau. The cybercriminals exploited vulnerabilities in the company’s corporate banking system, transferring funds through multiple transactions to accounts within Nepal.

Superintendent of Police Deepak Raj Awasthi labeled the incident as a landmark cyberattack in Nepal’s banking history, exposing critical flaws in financial cybersecurity. Preliminary investigations reveal that the stolen funds may have been used for illegal hundi transactions to settle remittances for Nepali workers abroad. Several individuals who received portions of the money have been arrested, but the exact method of the hack remains unclear. Authorities are urging banks to strengthen digital defenses as this breach raises alarm across Nepal’s financial sector.
