Kopan Monastery School

Kopan Monastery School Kopan Monastery is an education center for both eastern & western Students for both modern & spirit.

Kopan Monastery

Kopan Monastery, originally known as the "Mt. Everest Center for Buddhist Studies" in Lawudo, Solukhumbu, was re-established in 1972 by Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche. The monastery moved to its current location on a hill in Kapan village, Kathmandu Valley, with its first Western student, Zina, a Russian princess, whom they met in 1965 in Darjeeling, India. Kopa

n Monastery began as a school in the Solu-Khumbu region, fulfilling the promise of the previous Lawudo Lama to provide monastic education for local children. Due to the harsh climate and difficult conditions, the school relocated to Kapan with 25 monks. Today, it is a thriving community of over 370 monks from Nepal and Tibet. Nearby is Khachoe Ghakyil Ling Nunnery, established in 1993 with 380 nuns. Both institutions are under the spiritual guidance of Lama Zopa Rinpoche and are part of the FPMT, a global network of 161 centers. Education at Kopan

Education plays a pivotal role at Kopan Monastery. The monks, primarily from economically disadvantaged regions, receive free education and full board. Kopan offers three categories of education: General Education, Ta***ic College, and the Geshe Study Program.

- General Education: follows the Nepalese curriculum, providing monks with the opportunity to pursue higher studies at universities. In 2017, the school was officially registered under the name *Shree Arya Asanga Buddhist School*, offering education from kindergarten to grade 10.

- Ta***ic College: focuses on rituals, and arts like mandala creation, butter sculptures, ritual dances, and ta***ic text memorization.

- The Geshe Study Program: spans 16 years and covers the five major Buddhist texts, preparing monks to receive the Geshe Rabjampa degree. Kopan also offers translation training, computing skills, and a bridge between modern education and traditional Buddhist studies. Future Directions

Following the vision of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the monastery’s founders, Kopan Monastery aims to produce compassionate, good-hearted individuals who can benefit society. Monks may return to their communities to teach, continue their studies, or serve in Buddhist centers worldwide. Kopan also supports monks who wish to pursue lifelong retreat. Looking ahead, Kopan plans to affiliate with a university to offer academic Buddhist studies to non-Tibetan-speaking students.

Wish you all a very happy Dharma Chakra Pravartan day🙏

Driven by a heart of endless grace,
He shared the Dharma with our weary race,
To break the chains of every rigid mind,
Leaving all dogmas and all views behind.
To Gautama, who set the spirit free,
I bow in deepest, humble modesty.🙏
