A 7-day course of antibiotics is just as effective as 14 days for most bloodstream infections.

In a trial of 3,608 patients across 74 hospitals, the shorter course was equally safe and effective across ICU and non-ICU patients, different infection sources, and pathogen types. Secondary outcomes such as relapse, complications, hospital stay, and resistance were also comparable between groups. This highlights the potential to safely reduce antibiotic use, lowering drug exposure, side effects, resistance, and costs without increasing the risk of death.

🔬 Meta-Analysis Workshop Successfully Completed!

Researchers analyzed genetic data from over 5.1 million people to create polygenic scores (PGSs) that estimate a person’s inherited risk for higher body weight. These scores could explain up to 17.6% of BMI differences in Europeans, with varying accuracy across other ancestry groups. In children, higher PGSs were linked to faster weight gain and earlier adiposity rebound. Among adults, those with higher scores tended to gain more weight over time and were more likely to regain weight after weight loss. These findings suggest that PGSs can enhance early prediction and targeted prevention of obesity, especially when applied early in life.

A new study has identified mitochondrial oxidative stress as a key factor driving poor outcomes in liver cancer by promoting tumor growth and weakening immune defense.

Researchers developed a 9-gene risk model to predict patient survival, with MMP1 emerging as a central player. It boosts cancer cell growth, invasion, and survival, while also impairing immune activity - highlighting it as a potential target for new therapies, especially in AFP-negative or treatment-resistant cases.

Recent research reveals that neurons can directly transfer mitochondria to cancer cells, enhancing their metabolism, stemness, stress resistance, and metastatic potential.

Notably, chemical denervation (using BoNT/A) led to reduced metabolic activity and fewer invasive lesions. This suggests that targeting mitochondrial transfer at the nerve–cancer interface could be a promising strategy to combat metastasis.
