Here are the new rules made by the Australian Government for international students, which will be applicable from mid-2024:
1. Introduction of the Genuine Student (GS) requirement: This replaces the previous Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement. The GS requirement is designed to identify students who genuinely intend to obtain a quality education in Australia and do not plan to use the student visa program as a means of permanent migration.
2. Changes to the application form: The application form will feature targeted questions providing visa decision-makers with a comprehensive understanding of the applicant’s motives for studying in Australia.
3. Increased English language proficiency requirements: The English language proficiency requirements have been increased. This means students will need to demonstrate a higher level of English proficiency to be eligible for a student visa.
4. Lowered age limit for Graduate visa applicants: The age limit for Graduate visa applicants has been lowered from 50 to 35. This change is aimed at attracting younger international graduates.
5. Varied length of stay for international graduates: The length of stay for international graduates varies based on qualifications, ranging from two to three years. This provides international students with more opportunities to gain valuable work experience in Australia after they graduate.
These changes underscore the government's commitment to a high-integrity international education sector. Prospective international students to stay informed and prepare for these changes to ensure a smooth application process.
