The environment and animal behavior have changed as a result of climate change, bringing humans and wild animals closer together where there is a higher risk of contamination. More people are becoming susceptible to zoonotic diseases.

Researchers say diseases that spread between humans and animals will become increasingly commonplace as human expansion into previously uninhabited areas intensifies.

If surveillance focuses only on diseases that have already emerged, we’ll remain behind the curve. Better prediction of future pandemics will need to integrate animal, planetary and human health.
