A banana bond (also called a bent bond) is a special type of covalent bond in which the electron density is curved rather than lying directly along the line joining two nuclei. It commonly occurs in electron-deficient molecules and highly strained ring compounds.

Key points
Also called: Bent bond
Shape: Curved ("banana-shaped") electron density
Common examples:
Diborane (B₂H₆): Contains 3-center, 2-electron (3c–2e) banana bonds between B–H–B bridge atoms.
Cyclopropane (C₃H₆): The C–C bonds are bent because the ring angle (60°) is much smaller than the normal tetrahedral angle (109.5°).
CEE/NEB exam point
Most important example: Diborane (B₂H₆)
Definition to remember: A banana bond in diborane is a three-center, two-electron (3c–2e) bond, where two electrons are shared by two boron atoms and one bridging hydrogen atom.
