A collaborative study by researchers from Banaras Hindu University and Florida State University (USA) has shed new light on how varying intensities of exercise influence immune function and recovery. The findings, presented at the World Obesity Congress (WOC) 2025 in Orlando, explore the immunological response to acute graded exercise and its implications for obesity management.
Led by Dr. Pradeep Singh Chahar, Assistant Professor at the Department of Physical Education, Banaras Hindu University, currently working as a Visiting Scientist at Florida State University, the research investigated how high-, moderate-, and low-intensity exercises impact white blood cell (WBC) activity and immune cell dynamics.
The study highlights the crucial role of exercise intensity in regulating immune function. While high-intensity workouts can enhance adaptation, they may also temporarily weaken immunity if not balanced with adequate recovery. These findings emphasize the importance of tailoring training loads to optimize performance and minimize risks of illness or overtraining. Understanding how exercise intensity shapes immune responses can help design better training and recovery strategies.
