Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites develop resistance to the drugs designed to kill them, making infections harder to treat.
AMR is a global health threat in 2024, with projections of 10 million deaths annually by 2050 if left unaddressed.
Overuse and misuse of antibiotics in humans, animals, and agriculture contribute to this crisis.
Key focus areas in 2024 include:
1. Global Surveillance: Monitoring resistant strains globally.
2. Stewardship Programs: Rational use of antibiotics in healthcare.
3. Research & Innovation: Development of new antibiotics and alternatives.
4. Public Awareness: Educating about the dangers of self-medication and overuse of antimicrobials.
Efforts are guided by the WHO’s Global Action Plan to combat AMR through a “One Health” approach that integrates human, animal, and environmental health strategies.
