🚨Britain's most senior military officer has declared the UK is facing the "most dangerous period" he has known in his entire military career.❗
Air Chief Marshal Sir Rich Knighton highlighted the soaring threat from Russia and the need to prepare the country’s armed forces for changes in the nature of warfare.
He said: “In my 35-year career, this is the most dangerous period that I have known.
"And, as a consequence, it is important that we enhance the capability and the readiness of our Armed Forces alongside our allies.
"To deter our adversaries from doing something daft.”
His warning was made amid increasing alarm over whether Britain’s ‘hollowed out’ military is prepared for modern-day threats.❗
Former Tory defence secretary Ben Wallace warned only two years ago the three services had been ‘hollowed out’ over 30 years of successive governments.
And all three services, in particular the Army, have suffered shortfalls in recruitment after it was privatised in 2012 by the Ministry of Defence.
Then the MoD signed a £1.3 billion recruiting project with outsourcing firm Capita, putting the company in the frontline of finding news soldiers.
Regular Army numbers have frequently dropped below 73,000- the smallest the service has been in 200 years, during which the UK has faced many threats from abroad.
The Chief of the Defence Staff, an engineer and RAF officer, warned the country still has to prepare its military for the changes in warfare.
He said: “And that's why it is important that we deliver on enhancements in our efficiency and deliver more capability and put it in the hands of our warfighters."
His warning was ahead of the expected publication of the long-awaited Defence Investment Plan in the next few weeks.
The document will outline how new equipment and defence infrastructure will be funded over the coming decade and was first due to be released in autumn 2025.
The prime minister Keir Starmer has announced the plan would be published before a Nato summit "in just a few weeks' time.”
Sir Rich highlighted the growing threat of Russia to UK security and said the Kremlin is "raising the stakes.”
