The holiday season looks different around the world, but the values remain the same: care, connection, and compassion.
At International Nurse CE, we’re deeply grateful for nurses and healthcare providers everywhere who continue showing up for their patients, their communities, and each other, often across borders, cultures, and time zones.
As the year draws to a close, we wish you peace, rest, and renewed purpose.

Yomari Punhi: A Sweet Reminder of Culture, Community, and Connection
Today in Nepal, we celebrate Yomari Punhi, a Newari festival marking the end of the rice harvest. Families gather to make Yomari, a soft, steamed dumpling made of rice flour and filled with chaku (molasses) or khuwa. It’s a festival that brings warmth into kitchens, stories into homes, and connection into every shared bite.
At International Nurse CE, celebrations like Yomari Punhi remind us why cultural competence matters.
Nursing isn’t only about understanding illness; it’s about understanding people: their traditions, beliefs, celebrations, and the cultural rhythms that shape their daily lives. Festivals like these deepen our respect for the communities we serve.
Wishing everyone a warm and joyful Yomari Punhi!

Gufa: A Lesson in Cultural Competence
This week, my children completed their Gufa, a traditional Newar rite of passage where young girls spend time in seclusion before symbolically “marrying” the sun. It’s a ceremony filled with history, protection, and community; one that has been practiced for generations.
As a western woman and nurse, I’ll be honest: some parts of this tradition are uncomfortable for me. But cultural competence isn’t about agreeing with every practice we encounter. It’s about listening, learning, and respecting experiences outside our own worldview.
Gufa reminds me of an important truth:
Just because something is unfamiliar to us doesn’t mean it’s wrong.
Just because we don’t fully understand a tradition doesn’t mean it lacks meaning or value.
This is the heart of cultural humility: staying curious, compassionate, and open.
International Nurse CE exists to help nurses build exactly this awareness: respect for culture, space for nuance, and the courage to examine our own assumptions.
Curiosity over Judgment
Respect over Assumption
Understanding over Agreement
Nepal teaches these lessons daily, and I’m so grateful to learn alongside my children.

A small moment this week reminded me how ongoing cultural learning really is.
I had a bit of yesterday’s boiled (cooled and refrigerated) milk in a container and poured today’s cooled milk into it. My sister-in-law looked at me, laughed, and said, “You mixed today’s milk with bashi milk?”
“Bashi” means “old,” and even one-day-old milk qualifies. And of course, everyone here knew this… except me.
It was a lighthearted moment, but a powerful reminder:
Cultural competence isn’t a skill we master. It’s a practice we return to, with humility, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.
Whether in Nepal or in a clinical setting anywhere in the world, we grow when we stay open to the small, everyday lessons that shape people’s lives.

Dengue: What You’ll Learn (and Why It Matters)
Dengue season is far from over, even in Nepal where the rains have stopped and the days and nights are cooling down. Monsoon (roughly April through August) and flooding of the rice-paddies (planted in June and harvested in November) create perfect conditions for the Aedes mosquito. With climate change, the risk for dengue extends from March through November. (Yes! Even my kids are still getting mosquito bites.)
For nurses, this isn’t just about tropical illness; it’s about prevention, community education, and understanding how culture and environment shape care.
Here’s what you’ll learn in our course:
âś… The dengue virus, its clinical stages, and pathophysiology
âś… Recognizing early warning signs of severe illness
âś… Dengue's global impact
âś… And so much more!
In Bhaktapur, we combine lecture with real-world exposure, where rice paddies flood and community health meets tradition.

Bhaktapur’s Pottery Square is a living link to Nepal’s history, a place where earth, water, and skill come together to form something timeless.
For generations, artisans have shaped clay here by hand, creating everything from temple lamps to everyday pots. This tradition is more than craft, it’s cultural resilience, creativity, and community.
At International Nurse CE, we believe understanding local traditions deepens our connection to the people and places where we care.

Ever heard of Typhoid Mary?
She was an Irish cook in early 1900s New York: cheerful, talented, and unknowingly spreading Salmonella typhi wherever she worked.
Mary Mallon felt completely healthy but turned out to be the first asymptomatic carrier of typhoid fever in the U.S.
When health investigators pieced it all together, they quarantined her on a tiny island off the Bronx: first for three years and later for decades.
Her story sounds like a quirky bit of history, but it actually reshaped how we handle infection control, ethics, and the balance between personal freedom and public safety.
As nurses, we know how relevant that still is today. From COVID to MRSA, we’re always walking that same line: protecting our patients, our communities, and ourselves.
So, here’s to Typhoid Mary! A cook who never meant harm and helped change public health forever.

Bhaktapur under the Full Moon: Culture and Care, Intertwined
Last night, the streets of Bhaktapur came alive under the full moon.
The Newar community gathered to celebrate Sakimana Puhni, a festival honouring harvest, nourishment, and gratitude.
People created grain mandalas, intricate designs made from rice, lentils, and bread. By morning they’ll be gone, but their message lasts: that beauty and connection are found in simple, shared rituals.
At International Nurse CE, we believe that culture shapes care.
Understanding traditions like this helps nurses around the world build empathy, connection, and deeper patient understanding, the heart of Cultural Competence.

The Five-Story Temple: Bhaktapur’s Living Legend
Did you know Bhaktapur is home to Nepal’s tallest pagoda-style temple? The Nyatapola Temple, literally meaning “five stories”, has stood strong for over 300 years, surviving multiple earthquakes and still towering proudly over Taumadhi Square.
Each level represents one of the five basic elements of life: earth, water, fire, air, and sky. The temple isn’t just architecture; it’s a symbol of balance, strength, and resilience.
This site always sparks reflection: how culture, history, and health are all connected through balance and endurance.
