What happens when two communities meet for the first time after a long time, only to realise they speak the same language of heart and purpose?
Recently, the and school communities came together in a truly heartwarming exchange. It wasn’t just a meeting; it was a celebration of shared experiences, laughter, and the beginning of a lasting connection.
But more importantly, it was also a space to discuss a vital shift in how we engage with the world: The transition from Himalayan Voluntourism to Himalayan Regenerative Tourism.
Why "Regenerative"?
It’s more than a mindset change—it’s about fostering thriving community systems. Unlike traditional models, regenerative tourism focuses on:
Authentic Engagement: Moving beyond "visiting" to truly connecting.
Inclusive Growth: Working alongside local and international agencies to revitalize small destinations in Nepal.
Systemic Impact: Creating meaningful connections that leave a place better than we found it.
Empowering the Next Generation
At Himalayan Regenerative Tourism, we are bridging the gap between global classrooms and grassroots realities. Our programs for schools and universities offer:
Shared Learning: Global educators and student leaders visiting Nepal for immersive experiences.
Grassroots Insights: Exploring how communities adapt to global challenges through interconnectedness.
Nature-Based Wisdom: Learning resilience through a deep-rooted connection with the environment.
We aren't just traveling; we are practicing Global Citizenship. By understanding how communities thrive at a local level, we prepare future leaders to solve problems on a global scale.
Are you ready to shift your perspective? Let’s move beyond the surface and dive into the heart of community-led regeneration.

Dear Friends and Partners,
As the sun sets on this year and the peaks of the Himalayas glow with the promise of a new dawn, we find ourselves reflecting on a journey that began nearly twenty years ago.
Since our inception, we have had the privilege of connecting over 100 schools, universities, and organizations with the heart of Nepal. But this year, we felt a deeper calling. We have transitioned from Himalayan Voluntourism to Himalayan Regenerative Tourism—a shift that honors our past while committing to a future where travel doesn’t just “visit” a place, but actively helps it thrive.
We carry with us the enduring spirit of our founder, Late Mr. Prabin Gautam. Prabin’s life was a testament to the fact that we are all connected by a bond of trust, love, and empathy. He believed that every human has the power to influence and inspire, and today, we carry his legacy forward with more passion than ever.
We spent this past year returning to our roots—sitting with our communities, building new bridges of trust, and reshaping our vision with a quiet, steady purpose.
As we stand at the threshold of 2026, we wish you a year of “Regeneration.” May this New Year bring you:
Deep Connections: That you find belonging in the people and places around you.
Renewed Purpose: That your journeys—both literal and personal—leave the world a little brighter.
Gentle Growth: That like the mountain spring, you find the strength to renew yourself and your surroundings.
We invite you to join us in 2026. Let’s walk together with respect and humility, proving that travel can be a healing force for our world—one authentic connection at a time.
Happy New Year from our mountains to yours.

Exploring the Shift From Service Learning to Community Engagement
By Kathryn T. Berkman, Meredith Robinson, and Megan Vosk.

From “Service” to “Engagement”
The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) recently updated its terminology from “Service Learning” to “Community Engagement” and issued revised guidelines for what Community Engagement could be in IB continuum schools. This change reimagines the potential students have to find solutions to societal issues and has numerous possible benefits, such as increased resilience and compassion amongst our students. The IBO explains that Community Engagement is much broader than Service Learning. In Community Engagement: Enhancing the MYP, they write,
“Community Engagement is a form of learning in which students engage respectfully and equitably with their communities, utilizing knowledge and skills learned in the classroom. It provides opportunities for learners to engage responsively to opportunities and challenges in and with their communities, and to contribute positively through principled action”
The Shift: Service Learning to Community Engagement
The shift from "Service Learning" to "Community Engagement" reflects a deeper, more equitable philosophy in how visitors interact with local communities.
Why and How Himalayan Regenerative Tourism Shaping the Future of Community Engagement and helping Educators and School communities to integrate these practices into their school programs!
Himalayan Regenerative Tourism is an advanced framework that naturally embodies the principles of community engagement and can shape the future of the region by going beyond mere sustainability.
1. Moving from "Sustaining" to "Improving"
* Sustainability aims to do no harm (net-zero impact).
* Regenerative Tourism aims to actively improve the social, cultural, and ecological health of the destination (net-positive impact).
*How it Shapes the Future through Community Engagement

"Empowering the next generation to care for nature!
We're thrilled to share the successful launch of our School Community Nature Club drive in three community schools near Nagarkot, Nepal - Janakalyan School, Shiladevi School, and Sanjeevani School.
This initiative was made possible through collaboration with the government forest department and local government nurseries, where we gained valuable knowledge and collected native plants for the schools. But the real magic happened when our community came together! Students, teachers, and locals enthusiastically participated in preparing saplings, and many students even brought plants from their own homes, showcasing their eagerness to contribute.
With the participation of 230 students and over 30 school administrators and teachers, we've not only spread awareness about environmental stewardship but also taken action. Together, we've planted around 500 native plants to promote reforestation in the area.
This initiative aims to equip these beautiful communities with the knowledge and skills to conserve nature and use resources sustainably. We're proud to be part of this journey towards a greener future!
Big thanks to the schools, students, government forest department, local government nurseries, and everyone involved for their dedication and teamwork. Let's continue to nurture our planet together!
