In urban planning, it is incredibly important to engage with diverse groups and understand their different perspectives. Therefore the Master in Urban Ecological Planning has a long tradition in providing guest lectures from researchers and professors who can share their experiences and projects. This week, we had the pleasure of hosting Gilbert Siame, who spoke about governance and co-production, and Deborah Navarra, who provided insights into European projects aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, she also is involved with.

The photo shows our class together with Gilbert, who has lived in Cape Town for many years and is very familiar with the local conditions. He was the perfect person to answer our students' questions about the upcoming fieldwork in South Africa.

Only 10 days left until our program’s annual field trip begins!
Our 12 students are heading to South Africa, where they’ll not only dive into new knowledge but also take a close look at two occupied housing projects and engage with the local residents. It’s going to be an exciting 6 weeks, and we invite you to join us on Instagram and follow along!

resilience for climate transition. UEP extends heartfelt
thanks to all the speakers, moderators, and participants
for their valuable insights, dialogues, and
contributions, making the symposium a remarkable
success.

Amidst the uncertainties we face, here's hoping we
continue bridging Global South-North narratives in
planning while proactively striving for just urban
futures.

We cordially invite you to join us in celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Urban Ecological Planning Master’s program! To commemorate this milestone, we are hosting a symposium themed "Urban Resilience Symposium for Climate Transition: Bridging South-North Narratives on Land and Culture."

The goal of the symposium is to foster dialogue that bridges the gap in urban planning between the Global South and North, exploring how land and culture function both as resources and contested domains in urban settings. It further aims to investigate how these resources can be harnessed to enhance urban resilience for climate transition. The symposium’s agenda is enriched by our collaborative partners from India, South Africa, Italy, Nepal, and Uganda, creating a rich tapestry of perspectives and experiences via two tracks:
• Morning Track: Land-Use as a Shared Resource
• Afternoon Track: Mainstreaming Culture and Circularity for Urban Resilience

The symposium is hybrid, allowing for both in-person and virtual participation, followed by a Networking Dinner at 18:00.

Symposium Date and Time: June 26, 2024, from 8:45 to 16:00 CEST.

Location for Physical Participation: GRUVA, NTNU, Trondheim

Location for Virtual Participation: Zoom (link to be shared upon registration)

🎓✨ UEP Master's Thesis Sneak Peak ✨ 🎓

In 2023, UEP student Alberto Vertiz spent two months in Kathmandu, Nepal, researching the governance and ecological processes involved in restoring the city's lifeline, the Bagmati River. Alberto's research was funded by the SAMAJ scholarship, and we were thrilled to learn about his findings.

"The Bagmati River in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal is considered holy by many who practice Hinduism and Buddhism. Sadly, the river today presents itself as a degraded, trash-filled, polluted entity that meanders through both Kathmandu and Lalitpur. In recent decades, several issues have arisen concerning the Bagmati. Sand mining, squatter settlements, religious activities, and sewage dumping have all contributed to the degradation of the river.

Previously, the Bagmati was seen as an important landmark of the Kathmandu Valley, where people engaged in activities along its banks and swam in its clean waters. However, as the urban area around this river developed, the image of Bagmati's riverbank has been reduced to a wasteland. Many of Kathmandu's citizens merely cross Bagmati's bridges without daring to venture any closer to its murky waters.

Over the past decade, there has been a growth in social awareness campaigns and environmental conservation programs through different government and non-government institutions. However, none have made a significant impact. This can be attributed to the lack of available resources and the absence of ideal ecological solutions that could be implemented within the riverscape.

This thesis firstly explores the many ways in which different institutions associated with this urban river could potentially build strong partnerships and collaborate with local communities to guide the ecological restoration of the Bagmati River. Furthermore, it explores various ecological solutions viable for the context and presents an analysis of possible spatial implementations along the Bagmati River. In doing so, the thesis provides stakeholders associated with Bagmati an in-depth understanding of the various ecological and governance solutions that can accelerate the restoration process of the river."
