Reflecting on our experiences as students with a focus on modeling and simulation, we have identified several gaps between the academic experience of students doing modeling and simulation projects and that of students doing experimental projects. These gaps occur in the critical areas of networking and communication as well as knowledge transfer and preservation, Consequently, the primary objective of this project is to bridge these gaps in the academic experience of students focused modeling and simulation by establishing a virtual simulation lab (VSL) to promote knowledge transfer among students as well as to stimulate network and relationship building. A secondary objective is to communicate teaching concepts to research students and stress the importance of teaching as a crucial basis for elevating the quality of research, by encouraging research students to teach other students skills and tools they deem valuable for research and course projects. The desired outcomes could be a broader education for modeling and simulation students, a forum for real-life social networking and communicating ideas between students, a learning center providing students the opportunity to produce higher quality graphics, presentations, project deliverables, etc., a platform to facilitate multi-disciplinary research collaborations, and a vector to communicate the link between excellence in both teaching and research.
