Last week we gathered at the library of Universitetet i Stavanger (Ullandhaug campus) to watch the live announcement of 2026's Abel Prize winner. The Abel Prize committee decided to award this year's prestigious mathematics prize to Gerd Faltings! He received the Abel Prize "for introducing powerful tools in arithmetic geometry and resolving long-standing diophantine conjectures of Mordell and Lang".

Our local mathematics expert, professor Alex Nielsen, provided an insightful analysis of the laureate's work and its relation to activities at the University of Stavanger. 📝

A lively IMF event January 13th, 2026 with homemade waffles 🥮. Our colleague Jan Terje Kvaløy told us about "How to count":

How should we count when the results will be used for comparisons and decisions? Naïve counting might lead to totally wrong conclusions and often adjustments are needed. With a small delay due to the holiday rush, we are happy to share a few words about the second (and final) week of the NPACT 2025 PhD School — and to wrap things up overall.

During the second week, we explored a broad range of topics, from dark matter with T. Bringmann, to the physics of neutron stars with A. Kurkela, and gravitational waves and data analysis with A. Nielsen. The lectures sparked many engaging discussions and nicely complemented the themes of the first week.

Beyond the academic program, there was also time to unwind and connect — with activities like football and frisbee adding to the relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

We officially concluded the school with a joint lunch and a final presentation summarizing the past two weeks. Looking back, the NPACT 2025 PhD School was a clear success.

A big thank you to all participants, lecturers, and organizers for making this school such a productive and enjoyable experience!
