🗣️🌍Sheena Sookrajowa, Work Package Leader for Mauritius in the TranCit project, recently participated in the International Association for Human Rights Education (IAHRE) Annual Conference on “Re-imagining Human Rights Education in a Turbulent World,” held in Münster, Germany, from 26–27 May 2026.

The conference provided a vibrant platform to explore Human Rights Education across diverse contexts and challenges 🤝.

⚖️Aligning with TranCit’s objectives, Sheena presented on: “The interplay between the Convention on the Rights of the Child and Government’s Educational Policies: A Study of Economically Deprived Communities in Mauritius.” Drawing on a document analysis of education legislation, government reports, policies, and press articles, her paper examined how the Convention on the Rights of the Child has shaped education policies in Mauritius, and assessed how inclusive and effective government initiatives have been from 1990 to 2025 in ensuring every child’s right to education.

🌱Her findings underline the need for more comprehensive, integrated policies that ensure the continuous involvement of all relevant actors so that the right to education is realized for every child, especially those in economically deprived communities.

Highlights from our workshop 2026 in Norway
💬 The fourth and final workshop in our series took place on 11–13 April 2026 at VID Stavanger.

Under the theme “Navigating Loyalties in Intercultural History and Citizenship Education: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives,” the workshop—like the previous ones—fostered lively presentations, dialogue, and reflection among 30 participants.
The group brought together researchers in history, social science, education and citizenship studies from the TranCit case countries:
Norway (VID, MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion and Society, University of South-Eastern Norway, University of Stavanger, Norwegian University of Science and Technology), Madagascar (Université d’Antananarivo), South Africa (University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of South Africa), and Mauritius (University of Mauritius), as well as colleagues from the United Kingdom (University of Leeds, London South Bank University) and Italy (Roma Tre University).

📚 Professors Johanns Seroto and Audrey Osler both gave inspiring keynotes with Professor Seroto setting the tone on the first day of the workshop by critically engaging and reflecting on transloyalties and citizenship education as a concept.

🔍 Presentations explored themes related to citizenship, history education, and inclusive education. Key topics included lived worldviews, and discourses around colonial history, critical race theory, human rights education, postcolonial perspectives, and history teaching in segregated societies. On the final day, TranCit work package leaders and PhD fellows presented insights and experiences from across the project in their respective countries.

Highlights from our workshop 2026 in Madagascar

💬Our third of four final workshops took place on 20-21 April 2026 at the Lovasoa Cross-cultural Competence Center (https://www.lovasoa.mg/) in Antsirabe, Madagascar.

Under the theme Navigating Loyalties in Intercultural History and Citizenship Education: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives, the workshop generated lively presentations, dialogue and reflection among 23 participants. The group included researchers in history, anthropology, sociology, education and teaching, literature, law and philosophy, representing a research organisation, the university and teacher education in the capital Antananarivo, institutions in Antsirabe as well as universities in the north (Antsiranana), northwest (Mahajanga), east (Toamasina) and west (Toliara) of Madagascar.

📚Professor Audrey Osler delivered an inspiring keynote on “Education for flexible citizenship in an inflexible and intolerant age” and also contributed a session on publishing internationally. Helihanta Rajaonarison, Madagascar work package leader and chair of the local organising committee, ensured a smoothy run workshop, while Ellen Vea Rosnes, Trancit project leader, introduced the concept of transloyalties and the project as a whole.

🔍The presentations explored the history of citizenship education in Madagascar as well as contemporary approaches to the field. Key teams included loyalties, poverty, colonisation and decolonisation, traditional forms of citizenship, and specific Malagasy cultural perspectives. The role of religion and literature in citizenship education was also examined.

📚 Join us for the book launch of "Transloyalties, Connected Histories and World Christianity", edited by Frieder Ludwig, Ellen Vea Rosnes (TranCit project leader), Joar Haga, Marina Xiaojing Wang, and Jairzinho Lopes Pereira.

This two-volume work from VID vitenskapelige høgskole explores World Christianity through the concept of transloyalties, revealing complex, interconnected histories.

🌍✨ Reflecting on our TranCit workshop in Mauritius

During our workshop week in Mauritius, we had the opportunity to engage in a series of activities centered around our TranCit project.

A highlight from the workshop was to visit the National Archives Department, where Ellen Vea Rosnes and Marie Sophie Caroline Lafleur-Yallappa immersed themselves in archival research, captivated by the rich resources available.

We were also honored to share our project goals with His Excellency, Mr. Dharambeer Gokhool, President of the Republic of Mauritius, and The Honourable Dr. K. S. Sukon, Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Research. Their engagement underscores the significance of our work in the context of Mauritian education and citizenship.

🤝 A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to making this gathering a fruitful space for deep inquiry and collaborative growth. We are excited to continue this journey in our upcoming workshops in Madagascar and Norway!

🌍 Exciting update from our TranCit workshop in Mauritius!

The second of our four TranCit workshops took place on January 26, 2026, at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Mauritius. The theme of this session was "Navigating Loyalties in Intercultural History and Citizenship Education: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives".

This engaging roundtable brought together 12 participants, including historians, a former citizenship studies educator, curriculum developers, and independent researchers from across Mauritius, sparking enriching discussions and reflections. We delved into key concepts such as loyalties, citizenship, transloyalties, and history pedagogy, and explored how these intersect within the Mauritian educational context.

Highlights from the workshop included:
- Professor Ellen Vea Rosnes, TranCit Project Leader, provided an insightful overview of the "Transloyalties in Citizenship Education" project.
- PhD Candidate Marie Sophie Caroline Lafleur-Yallappa charted the fascinating history of education in Mauritius.
- Madvee Jane Moteea-Sewlall delivered a powerful presentation titled "Inclusive Curriculum Futures: Subaltern Insights into the Representation of Enslaved People in Mauritian Textbooks and Directions for Reform."
- Dr. Jimmy Harmon examined the question, "Which loyalties do teachers and pupils bring with them into contemporary classrooms?"

Additionally, Dr. Sadasivam Jaganada Reddi, a historian and former curriculum developer at the Mauritius Institute of Education, shared his experience in curriculum development and citizenship studies, particularly in relation to UNESCO initiatives. Mr. Chandra Rungasamy, also a former curriculum developer and citizenship studies educator, provided valuable insights into the evolution of citizenship education in Mauritius.

We are grateful for the contributions of all participants and look forward to continuing our discussions in the upcoming workshops in Madagascar and Norway!

✨ Insights from the TranCit workshop in Mauritius ✨

📜 PhD candidate Marie Sophie Caroline Lafleur-Yallappa and Professor Ellen Vea Rosnes had a great experience at the Mauritius Archives Department during the TranCit workshop in Mauritius from 26th-30th January.

Marie Sophie, deeply inspired by archival research, highlighted its crucial role in uncovering current and future trends in citizenship. She also spent a day at the Institut Cardinal Jean Margéot, where she collected documents on Catholic education.

🧐 As researchers and members of TranCit, we are passionate about advocating for the significance of archival research and its potential to shape our understanding of the past and guide future research.

🗣️TranCit member Brit Marie Hovland contributed at the National Conference for History Education in Bergen last week. Brit Marie is responsible for Work Package 5 in TranCit: Citizenship education in history teaching in Norway. At the conference, she led two sessions that connected Norwegianization, truth and reconcilliation to Norwegian history and citizenship education.
