Registration closes this afternoon!

From Reactivity to Regulation takes place live on Zoom tomorrow, Sunday 23 August, from 18:00 to 20:30 CEST.

Barking, lunging, withdrawing or losing focus may be the final result of several smaller pressures building up over time. This is known as trigger stacking.

During this 2.5-hour Professional Short Course, you will learn how to:
• recognise obvious and less visible sources of stress
• identify early signs that a dog is approaching their limit
• distinguish between learning, coping and simply enduring
• adjust distance, duration, difficulty and recovery breaks
• respond when a dog has already become overwhelmed
• support the client without blame or embarrassment
• evaluate whether a group class is suitable for the individual dog

The course is relevant for dog trainers, behaviour professionals, dog walkers, shelter and rescue staff, pet-care professionals, and those preparing to work professionally with dogs.

You will receive:

• the 2.5-hour live online course
• access to the recording for one year
• the PowerPoint presentation as a PDF
• an eight-page illustrated participant workbook
• a Client Communication Guide
• an additional recorded lecture on creating calmer training sessions
• a Certificate of Attendance if you attend the complete live session

Can’t attend live? You will still receive the recording and all course materials, but only full live attendance qualifies for the certificate.

Course fee: €55 / $65

TRIGGER STACKING ISN’T ALWAYS A SERIES OF DRAMATIC EVENTS

We often look for one obvious trigger.

But the experience that finally produces a visible reaction may only be the last addition to a much longer sequence.

The dog may already have experienced poor sleep, a disrupted routine, visitors at home, an uncomfortable journey or a difficult encounter on the way to the class.

Then we add an unfamiliar environment, other dogs, limited space, movement, waiting, repeated exercises and increasing difficulty.

Each experience may appear manageable on its own.
The dog experiences the accumulation.

This Sunday, we’ll look at both obvious and less visible sources of stress, early signs that a dog is approaching their limit and the practical changes professionals can make.

WHAT MAY ALREADY BE IN THE STACK?

Trigger stacking is often discussed as though we simply need to identify several obvious triggers.

In practice, the stack may contain ordinary experiences that wouldn’t usually concern us.

Their significance depends on the individual dog, the context, what has already happened and whether the dog has had sufficient opportunity to recover.

The final event may not have been particularly difficult. It may simply have been one more thing than the dog could manage at that moment.

Save this list for your next class or consultation.

And if you’d like to work with this in more depth, join me live on Sunday the 23rd of August for my Online Short Course:
From Reactivity to Regulation.
€55 / $65, including a participant workbook, Client Communication Guide, presentation PDF, one-year access to the recording and an additional recorded lecture.

FOUR QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE YOUR NEXT TRAINING CLASS

Before your next training class, ask four questions:

1. What might each dog already have experienced before arriving?
2. Which parts of the environment require the most effort from this individual dog?
3. Are the planned breaks genuinely supporting recovery?
4. And what will I change if the dog is no longer able to learn effectively?

Good class planning isn’t only about the exercises we intend to teach.
It’s also about creating conditions in which different dogs can feel safe enough to process, participate and recover.

This is what we’ll be working with live on Sunday in my new Short Course:

Understanding Barking

A 2-hour Masterclass with Turid Rugaas

Tuesday 1 September
19:00 CEST / 1 PM ET
Live on Zoom + recording available for 1 year

Barking is not a problem to fix. It’s a language to understand.

Different barks can have very different meanings — fear, frustration, excitement, loneliness, alerting or warning.

During this Masterclass, Turid will teach you how to recognise different types of barking, understand what is causing them, and how you can stop or minimise barking by addressing the cause rather than simply trying to suppress the behaviour.

You’ll learn about:

• Different types of barking and what they mean
• Fearful, frustrated, excited and alert barking
• How breed, environment and temperament influence barking
• Common mistakes that can unintentionally make barking worse
• Practical and calm ways to help dogs who bark

There will also be a live Q&A with Turid at the end of the session.

Choose the currency that suits you when you register: EUR, USD, GBP, CAD, AUD, CHF or HKD.

I have lost count of how many times I have started a training class with a perfectly good plan… only to realise that the plan needs to change almost immediately.

Perhaps one dog is already stressed when they arrive. Another begins barking or lunging, which affects the other dogs. The guardians become tense and nervous, and before long, much of the session is spent trying to manage the situation rather than actually teaching.

The result is often very little learning—if any—for both the dog and the guardian. And the instructor finishes the class feeling completely exhausted.

I know this situation well because I have experienced it many times, both in group classes and private sessions.

But there are good ways to prevent it.

Often, it is not one major change that makes the difference. It is a series of small, thoughtful adjustments to the environment, distance, timing, exercises and recovery breaks. And some of those adjustments may be much simpler than you expect.

This is what we will explore in my new Professional Short Course:

From Reactivity to Regulation
Calmer Dogs, Happier Clients and Less Stress in Training Classes

During this 2.5-hour live online course, you will learn how to recognise trigger stacking earlier, identify less visible sources of stress and make practical changes that support regulation, recovery and safer learning.

The course fee is €55 / USD 65, and quite a lot is included:

- the complete 2.5-hour live course
- access to the course recording for one year
- an eight-page illustrated participant workbook
- a Client Communication Guide
- the PowerPoint presentation as a PDF
- an additional recorded lecture: Creating Calm – Integrating Stress-Reducing Techniques into Dog Training
- a Certificate of Attendance for those who attend the complete live session

This is the first in a new series of Professional Short Courses (PSC) that I will be offering. Each course will focus on one important professional topic and provide practical knowledge that you can use directly in your work with dogs and their people.

This course takes place live on Zoom on Sunday, 23 August, from 18:00 to 20:30 CEST to accommodate students in both Europe and North-America.
