The Listening Experience

The Listening Experience Musicians' health, bodywork, lectures, musical perception, composition, aural and somatic explorations. What I offer: Bodywork. What I offer: Timani.

In the part of my work that involves bodywork I use somatic based therapies and practices. I guide clients through physical techniques and exercises from Nutritious Movement, Timani and Myofascial Energetic Release and Yoga in order to re-connect with their bodies and to adress, reliev or prevent pain or discomfort, strain injuries or injuries. In my work I also include hands-on techniques for gentle tissue mobilization using elements from Myofascial Energetic Release (MER), Energetic Bodywork and joint release in addition to somatic techniques for trauma release based on the work by Dr. Peter Levine. I also use somatic based mental techniques including Mind Detox and Embodying Exercise which uses therapeutic techniques for self-help in order to address physical and emotional issues. The goal of everything I do is to improve the client´s quality of life. We live in a fluid body which is constantly changing and adapting: to our personal physical and emotional surroundings as well as to our own inner climate of experiences, psychological holding patterns, concious and unconcious postural habits and neurological survival strategies. My work involves exploring these, finding more beneficial alternatives where this is possible and giving the body more options when dealing with physical and emotional challenges, trough physical training and movement, releasing techniques and/or somatic based mental techniques. Playing an instrument is a physical activity even though we might have a very mental and emotional approach to the work as musicians. Your body is your primary instrument and getting the body to function in a way that allows us to fully express our musical intention is the goal of every musician. But as musicians and teachers we need more knowledge about the workings of the body, and particularly the required workings of a musicians body in order to meet the specific physical and mental demands of playing an instrument or singing

Learn to bridge the gap between your musical intention and your physical ability on your instrument through knowledge, exercises, playing and movement analysis. What I offer: Listening. Hearing is an automatic response which happens when soundwaves hits our auditory organs. Listening means to turn our attention towards a specific sound source and sustain that mindful focus over a longer period of time with a specific intention. This is an activity which today in our world of distractions and multitasking is neither encouraged nor trained and which we are in the risk of losing. This has fundamental consequences, both for our physical, mental and spiritual health. Within neurology Interoception is the part of our nervous system which has as its task to “listen” to the body’s internal signals. Based on what it “hears” the rest of our nervous system is then able to take the necessary steps to uphold or restore balance and harmony - homeostasis- in our body.
“Embodiment” is a term which says something about how we communicate and co-operate with our body while performing something. The opposite is disembodiment. It’s perfectly possible to live a disembodied life while in a body and it’s quite ironic that in a society as the body-fixated as ours we are actively encouraged from an early age to ignore signals and communications from our own bodies. Signals which has as their purpose to keep us alive and in a state of balance. We are taught that these signals are not worth listening to, that they are flawed or stemming from weak willpower and lower inclinations. We are encouraged to ignore them and suppress them, at our workplace, in the gym, in school or when we are interacting with people around us. By doing this we are teaching people to actively cut off the feedback loops from their own bodies. Recent neurological research indicates that the diminished ability to sense our body is strongly related to some of the most common illnesses and ailments of our times including PTSD and chronic pain conditions. To increase and train this sense can and should be an essential part of every therapeutic process. Parallel to the internal listening ability of our nervous system our external sense of listening (to music or any other external sound) is not just concerned with receiving information or pleasant entertainment. External listening also involves certain of our cranial nerves which are part of our autonomic nervous system. These cranial nerves make out part of a complex neurological network responsible for our ability to function socially; to be able to interact with other people in a harmonious and creative way. Listening is therefore an activity with consequences far beyond that of mere entertainment. Within The Listening Experience I focus on listening both as a tool to increase musical awareness but also as a somatic technique for increasing health and awareness. I do this both through lectures, articles and bodywork sessions.

Just back from an enriching, view-expanding experience of Lomi lomi nui massage course in Bali.

Touch is the essential tool of healing we as humans possess.
When we hurt somewhere we automatically put our hand where it hurts, wherther the hurt is physical or emotional, like clutching our heart when in heart ache after a great loss.

In Hawaii lomi lomi nui was originnally a part of an expanded ritual given to royals and warriors before going to battle. It originally consisted of a mixture of dance, song and bodywork and has a strong spiritual element.

Just like MER (Myofascial Energetic Release) aims at affecting the body on several levels lomi lomi nourishes, not only our physical body but our emotional and spiritual self, our deep longing for gentleness, love and connection.

The strokes can sometimes be likened to the movement of waves flowing and ebbing, much like the beautiful Hawaiian language, rich in flowing vovels, being recited.

Although you lie naked on the bench , with a sarong covering the pelvis there is no sexual touch or stimulation involved.
Deep respect holds space for vulnerability.

So needed in these times we live in.

As a senior institute teacher at the Timani - Musicians' Health and Movement Institute I recently had a chance to talk to the students taking our three year certification about the concept of push-off which is very central in the Timani method for musicians. So I decided to try to write a blog article about some of the theory behind this fascinating concept and why it can be very valuable to know about for musicians.

How can the knowledge of physics, gravity and Newton´s third law be of aid to musicians seeking to play with more ease and less strain?

Just finnished the 2 day workshop and lecture course "Clinical strategies for scars, adhesians andctissue stifness" with the ever-inspiring Dr Robert Schleip hosted by The Fascia Hub in London. Two days with the latest research and exciting new discoveries related to the science of scars, adhesians, tension, fibrosis and densifications within the fasciasystem of the body.

I have 30something pages of dense handwritten notes and a huge collection of links to research papers relevant for my work both as a Myofascial Energetic Release practitioner and as an institute teacher in Fascia and anatomy at the Timani - Musicians' Health and Movement Institute in Oslo.

Also the chance to learn how to work with tools which was new to me, but which proved a very valuable addition to the hands-on approache of my bodywork techniques.

But most valuable of all: the experience of working and listening to a teacher who values the human element in both teaching and treatment, who honors the body-mind connection and the importance of conscious touch and a listening attention.

The name of my company just gets more and more appropriate🙂

Looking foreward to the coming workshop hosted by the Fascia Hub with ever-inspiring dr. Robert Schleip in London.

Scars come in many forms, both physical, emotional and mental and very often they are linked.

I often experience, when working on physical adhesions in people's bodies, that it unlocks emotional trauma or mental Imageries, which can bring on a richer insight and more freedom of both movement and expression, both in music and life.

In that way a body is a time machine, storing every moment of our lives, and bodywork is a way to time travel, addressing things we thought were forgotten and creating a new relationship with our past. Working with scars is a way to access the past of a body, and what better way to do it then with good scientifically-backed tools taught by a man who values human wonder and community.

Art shows reality filtered through the human experience of reality. Flavoured by the personal landscapes and lived experiences of that particular human being. Conscious, but also unconscious experiences.

Music making is also a process of filtering, both shaping the sounds by searching through our inner experience of the music itself, but also the movements of music making filtered through our tissues, bones and physiology.

The movements we make in order to sing or play are woven through the unique structures built by our life and life experiences. The tensions shaped by challenges, the patterns of allowing and denying or the lack of such. In this way music and the movements of music are just different facets showing who we are and what we hold. Few things are more personal or revealing.

In our search for the best movements in order to be able to produce conscientiously our inner experience of music we should never loose sight of this marvelous fact; that when we play or sing we are doing so by using a living organism comprised of memory, shaped by lived history, continually changing, governed by needs of survival and hope.
We should be gentler and more in awe when working with this structure, and we should never hesitate to ask for help when encountering pain or difficulty. Book your session today.

Working with bodies through bodywork, especially holistic approaches like Myofascial Energetic Release gives a glimpse into the ways traumatic experiences linked to shame and fear can get lodged in our bodies and in our myofascial system. Every Body is a unique record of our lived lives. Sometimes a MER-session is about learning to access and inhabit that body again in a safe way, through breath, movement and deep Listening. Through respect for the human you are. In my studio everyone are welcome. In my studio you are safe and you will be treated with gentelness and respect. Happy pride month❤️

Min type helt! Takk Budde, for å holde lyset brennende❤️❤️❤️❤️

My kind of hero! Thank you Bishop Budde for showing courage where seasoned politicians, hyper-rich billionaires, industrial owners, spineless technology moguls and heads of state shy away. Thank you for pointing out the double standards of a man who wants to be praised as a saviour for appealing to the baser instincts of people, and who uses his political position to condone hatred, racism, brutality, lies and abuse. A man who pardons people who stormed a democratic institution on which he himself now bases his power. Which focuses on revenge, personal vendetta and misinformation and offers people illusions, simplifications, lies and contempt. Thank you Budde, for keeping the light burning❤️❤️❤️❤️

A happy new year and warm thanks for the year which is passing. It has been both a rich and challenging year with a focus on balancing attempts at work and teaching with long covid and unpredictable health. Thank you to all friends and clients who have experienced and accepted cancellations and postponements, it is a great honor to be allowed to work on helping others with health challenges in the middle of my own process. Nothing is more instructive and humbling than that. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and an enriching and warm New Year
