📰 NMBU NEWS UPDATE | RESEARCH
NEW UN COMMITMENTS ON SUSTAINABLE AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING
Over 30 European ministers and senior officials have committed to bold actions aimed at addressing the growing housing crisis across Europe. The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) played an active role in shaping these commitments.
📌 NMBU Contribution:
NMBU urban and regional planning expert Roberta Cucca was among the contributors involved in drafting the new actions under the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
🏘️ Key Focus Areas:
The commitments reaffirm housing as a fundamental human right and propose concrete measures such as regulating short-term tourist rentals to improve housing accessibility and long-term sustainability.
📊 The Housing Challenge:
Recent UNECE research shows that more than one-third of households in the lowest 40% income bracket face housing stress, with many spending over 45% of their income on housing.
This challenge is evident even in Norway, where residents in urban areas such as Oslo and Viken often spend more than 30% of their income on housing.
🎓 Academic Impact:
Through its expertise in urban and regional planning, NMBU continues to contribute evidence-based research to global policy discussions on housing affordability and sustainability.
