Our Story

UiO:Norden is one of The University of Oslo's three interdisciplinary strategic research areas. Through interdiciplinary research we seek to provide new knowledge about the Nordic countries.

UiO:Nordic’s most important capital is the engagement of established and active researchers. The initiative is based on a broad range of expertise and strong research interests at UiO. We will explore:

- The Nordics in the world: Comparisons of and contrasts between the Nordic countries and between the Nordic region and other countries and regions, as well as between institutions, practices and cultural expressions internally in these countries.
- Nordic models, styles and traditions: How Nordic identities are constructed, debated, used and criticized in various areas of society, culture and aesthetics.
- History and preconditions: Shared historical features, disparities, and preconditions for the contemporary Nordic societies.
- Sustainability and opportunities for the future: Political, economic and cultural globalization, migration, Europeanization and standardization poses challenges. The development and opportunities of the Nordic countries are not only a matter of identifying problems and challenges, but also of studying deficiencies, solutions, adaptations and learning processes – across countries, regions and sectors.
