We recently had the pleasure of recording new music by Norwegian composer and trombonist Tarjei Grimsby, written for a traditional big band and inspired by the rich traditions of contemporary Nordic jazz.
Featuring acclaimed tenor saxophonist Marius Neset, one of Norway's leading jazz musicians, the session brought together the richness of a full big band with expressive solo performances, giving each composition its own distinct character.
From the first notes on the page to the final recording, it's always a privilege to be part of the journey that brings new music to life.

The best music often begins with a feeling.
A lyric that stays with you.
A melody that makes you smile before you even understand why.
For Majken, it was the line:
“I’ll go swimming, wearing just a great, big smile…”
Today marks the release of An Occasional Man by Majken Christiansen.
Inspired by the warmth, humour, and timeless character of classic jazz recordings from artists like Jeri Southern, Anita O’Day, and Julie London, the song became a journey, a recording, and eventually the title of the upcoming album itself.

After a powerful tour, the Håvard Stubø Quintet brought their final chapter to Newtone, recording an album that captures what comes after the stage: something permanent.
Featuring some of the most vital voices in Scandinavian jazz, from Sweden to Narvik in the far north, this project reflects both range and precision.
Bringing together essential musicians across borders, backgrounds, and generations, this wasn’t just a collaboration, it was a statement.
At Newtone, this is what we do best: capturing the moment where great music becomes timeless.

Not everything fits neatly into a box - and that’s exactly the point.
Meet The Lowground. A fresh collective of seasoned musicians pulling from country, roots, rock, and a touch of pop; blending it all into something that feels both nostalgic and new. Think rich guitar textures, pedal steel, warm basslines, and harmonies that stay with you long after the song ends.
Behind the sound is a group of artists with deep roots in bands like Lucky Lips, Orango, Mother Trudy, and collaborations with names like Amund Maarud, The Northern Belle, and Torgeir Waldemar. This is a convergence of experience, experimentation, and pure musical instinct.
Their debut single, “Shadows of Love,” is already out, marking the start of what promises to be an exciting journey.
And now, their live journey begins.
The Lowground takes the stage for their debut performance as special guests for Heigh Chief, setting the tone for what’s to come.

Something new is in motion
While Leif Johansenn has had the pleasure of working with Heigh Chief over the past seven records, their latest album, “Tales of the Once Was”, was recorded, mixed and mastered here at Newtone AS Recording Studios, marking an exciting new chapter in their sound.
