Timani helps musicians play with ease, reduce pain & enhance performance through exercises & anatomy. Move better to play better.

Timani draws on a deep understanding of science and anatomy. By focusing on the physiological aspects of playing and singing, the method enables musicians to make the best use of their body while practicing and performing. It’s being used by musicians worldwide – from soloists to entire ensembles, from students to established professionals – whether they’ve already experienced performance-related

Timani is being taught at several universities around the world, also at the Jazzcampus in Basel where you find the amazing jazz program called “Focusyear”. The musicians doing the Focusyear program receive Timani lessons at several occasions throughout the year, just like Dave Bryant who’s describing what he experienced was beneficial to his playing!

“As a professional pianist and music educator, Tina Margareta Nilssen joins the dots for us using her impressive knowledge of anatomy and movement. She unravels the science behind music performance, sifts out the relevant parts and presents concepts in a way that the performer, student, educator and clinician can readily understand and apply.

The Timani method is based on anatomy and physiology translating into healthy movement and practice. Healthier movement doesn't just mean less injury, it also supports the musical intention and enhances the performer's sense of wellbeing.

I echo Tina's belief that musicians can and should embrace anatomy and movement as a tool to unleashing their potential. Analysis is not paralysis - it empowers, enriches and elevates, and Timani delivers just that."

On February and March 1st I had a 2-hour free online Timani Workshop with a total of 120 participants from all around the world. I truly appreciate the possibility to meet so many musicians who are interested in learning more about their playing or singing through knowledge in anatomy and movement.

There was a violinist and pianist who played, and we focused on arm movements, stability from the sitting and standing, as well as what’s physically needed for fast or expressive movements.

Thank you to everyone who participated, for taking your time to tune in, staying focused and engaged, and being actively involved in the process by trying things out in your own space.

If you want to join a workshop like this too, feel free to sign up to our Timani newsletter to receive information about future events in your inbox!

There’s hardly any part of the body that is more mysterious to musicians than the wrist. We constantly aim to have a free wrist, but what does that actually mean? Sometimes we try to solve it by doing loosening movements of the wrist, and sometimes by certain positions. Both of those ways can have a place, but ultimately, it’s about coordination. On every instrument we need the wrists to activate in various ways, either by holding an instrument or bow, or by transferring the weight of the arm. There are many ways into this topic and in today’s video, you’ll learn how to make use of the natural stability in the carpal area (the base of the hand) to help with feeling freer in your wrist and fingers!

Timani teacher Elvira shows a simple but efficient exercise that helps activate your arms and improve ease when playing your instrument.

The Bouncy for arms-exercise stimulates the elasticity of your connective tissue which can ease the use of muscles and give a natural and safe contact with the instrument when you play afterwards. The exercise helps activate the arms and create natural push-off and ease for playing any instrument!

Timani founder Tina Margareta Nilssen demonstrates the heel-walk exercise. It’s a simple and effective way to feel more grounded and supported when you play or sing in a standing position.

By activating the connection between your heel and the gluteus maximus, you build greater stability, uprising support, helping your body work with you rather than against you while performing!
