New connection and a point of view for Langfjorden
New cottages, walking paths and access to the caves. More interventions will be presented tomorrow in Kirkenes.
This Master studio investigates and speculates on urban design in the border neighbourhood shared between Norway and Russia (Kirkenes, Nikel, Murmansk, etc.)

The project develops Kirkenes by creating new active urban spaces in different parts of the city.
- By doing different interventions in different parts of the city the project aims to make more of the city active. This will in turn make the city-center of Kirkenes more attractive to use and visit.
- The scale/complexity of each intervention will be different allowing varied use and varied users, from locals to tourists.
- The interventions will cater to different people by offering them activities that suits their interests and needs
Shown is two examples. The old molo and the viewpoint on Prestfjellet. The project will develop the six sites shown in the situation plan marked in red in different ways.

REVEAL THE INTERTWINED
The project makes room for all the users at three major transportation nodes. It uses this opportunity to create a public space organized for mobility and to reveal new kind of alternative mobility: train, bicycle, spark and even more!

Culture of Assembly – is a project that is proposing to reveal Kirkenes’ Mine History by applying a new layer on the former production chain! The new layer is recreating and activating the big infrastructures and closed down mine by reinserting identity!
Connecting and merging the original places of the mining process together by adding a Sauna path is bringing people into the industry area and keeps the mining network alive.

INDUSTRIAL SPACE FROM A BIRD PERSPECTIVE
Reconnecting Prestoya back to the city, considering that the connecting land will then change from a bird perspective. I will try to create small interventions for birds and humans, which will highlight the artificial land and change it in a good place for everybody. I will use the specificity of Prestoya, a bird watcher place, to change the artificial land. My main problematic is how all this birds with different needs can live together on this piece of land, and how human can experience bird life. I use existing building and vegetation to create new ones, and from those a new landscape and activities appear. By living on the artificial land, birds are involved in the ecosystem and transform the site in a good place, with lot of nature, respecting the environment.

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?
– “Eleanor Rigby.” The Beatles
In our latest one-week workshop we created fictional characters for Kirkenes.
I thought a lot about lonely people in Kirkenes. “Loneliness can affect anyone of us, of all ages and in all situations in life. Lonely people often feel that they are invisible. Nobody really notices them” For me it is important to help them so I wanted to design something that says “It’s getting better all the time”
One of my characters is a single man who just moved to Kirkenes, another is a girl that is bullied in her school, and another is an older woman living alone. One that I fell in love with is Reidar. He lives alone, is divorced, and is unemployed. From all the people I created he seemed the loneliest guy of all. He is a solitary person – he doesn’t want to spend too much time with other people, but would like to do some things together. I asked myself where he could be alone together with someone.
For him I came up with the concept of a public fishing place. In the Fisherman’s Nest one can transform the structure and make an individual personal space for fishing OR a place for several people. At the moment the site I selected is slambanken, which is currently a wasteland. In my concept I will try to find out if there is possibility to use it for something different.
The Fisherman’s Nest isn’t to be used only by fishermen, but will be designed for all people in Kirkenes. Do you have you any thoughts about this project? What kind of places could help lonely people? Where do they all belong?

At the Edge
Students are in Kirkenes, Norway and exploring! Does anyone have a spare spark or two we can borrow to help us get around quicker?
Studentene er her og utforsker byen. Er noen villig til å låne ut en spark eller to sånn at de kan komme seg rundt omkring raskere?
