The Adaptive and Multifunctional Structures (AMS) Lab in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, invites applications from highly motivated students for PhD positions. If you are passionate about mechanics, advanced materials, computational modelling, and innovative engineering design, we would be delighted to welcome you to our research group.

What do we work on?

They research lies at the intersection of solid mechanics, advanced manufacturing, smart materials, and computational engineering, with current focus areas including:

• Adaptive and morphing structures

• Composite materials and multifunctional composites

• Thin-walled structures, shells, and structural instabilities

• Deployable and space structures

• Computational mechanics and finite element methods

• Smart materials, compliant mechanisms, and structural optimization

• Advanced manufacturing and programmable fabrication

Who should apply?

They are looking for students with strong curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm for research. Prior expertise in a specific area is not mandatory—we value motivation, analytical thinking, and a willingness to learn. Students from Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil, Materials, Production, Applied Mechanics, and related engineering disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility

Direct PhD

• B.Tech./B.E. from a CFTI with a CGPA ≥ 8.0 (Master's degree not required, GATE not required)

Regular PhD

• Master's degree in a relevant discipline or a valid GATE qualification

Applications are now open for a fully funded Vice-Chancellor’s PhD Studentship at Buckinghamshire New University(BNU), linked to a prestigious Leverhulme Trust Research Project Grant.

Project title: Visuospatial Processing: Consequences of Physical Inactivity

This interdisciplinary PhD will investigate how physical inactivity affects visuospatial processing, which is a critical cognitive function for navigation, movement planning, and everyday activities. The research combines exercise science, with cognitive psychology, and neuroscience, using experimental methods to generate new insights into the relationship between inactivity and vision.

Duration: up to 3 years (full-time, on-site High Wycombe, UK)

Full tuition fees + £15,000 annual bursary

The Laboratory of Applied Space Microbiology is looking for a new doctoral researcher to join the team.

You’ll help us develop biotechnologies for Mars, so its exploration can be done sustainably, and help adapt what we find and develop to support sustainable development goals here on Earth. 🌍

A key part of this position will be designing and modeling a photobioreactor that could operate on Mars using Martian resources.

It’s a multidisciplinary project, so we welcome candidates from biology, engineering, mathematics or physics. Experience in bioprocess modeling and/or hardware development would be a strong plus.

FULLY-FUNDED PHD POSITIONS ON OIL, THE STATE, AND THE ENERGY TRANSITION IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH

They're opening three to four fully funded PhD positions at the University of the Basque Country (EHU) for S-OIL, my five-year project on national oil companies (NOCs) and the politics of decarbonisation across the Global South funded by the European Research Council (ERC).

The project investigates what happens to the state when the oil economy on which it was built faces an uncertain future. We're seeking researchers willing to conduct research through in-depth fieldwork in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Each position includes a salary, funded research stays at partner institutions, and substantial fieldwork support.

Candidates should have a grounding in political economy, development studies, anthropology, geography or related disciplines, and be interested in the politics of fossil fuels and the state beyond technocratic and market-driven framings.

Non-European applicants are especially welcome.
