Javad M. Velni is seeking two PhD students to join his team in Fall 2026 to work on developing multi-timescale, learning-enabled autonomous greenhouse platforms that integrate physics-informed models, plant-centered sensing, adaptive and reinforcement-learningโbased control, digital twins, and vision-guided robotic interaction to optimize crop growth, resource efficiency, and economic performance.
Strong background in computational science (particularly, control and machine learning) is essential, and prior exposure to plant sciences is desirable. Preference will be given to applicants who already hold an M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering with research experience in learning-based control and/or precision agriculture.

Funded PhD scholarship: Experimentally testing mechanisms behind interactions between managed and wild pollinators
The School of Agriculture and Food Science and Earth Institute at University College Dublin, Ireland
Duration: 4 years
Benefits: โฌ25,000 personal stipend per year (tax free), plus EU fees (Non-EU applicants must be in a position to pay the shortfall in fees). Research and travel costs are additional and covered by the grant.
Entry requirements: This project is suited for applicants with at least an undergraduate degree in ecology, zoology, environmental science or related discipline. Applicants should hold a minimum of a 2.1 in their degree programme.
