For many decades, gender roles in Western Europe have become more and more undefined. Men and women are expected to carry out the same tasks, both in the workplace and at home. In a relationship, reponsibilities and expenses are shared equally between the man and the woman. Many think this is a good way of doing things, others may wish for more defined gender roles.

In Russia, many people will be surprised that gender roles are much more strict within society than in Western Europe or the United States. In Russia, it is very rare that men are involved with housework or raising children. This may come as a surprise, but Russian women are incredibly grateful for help in this regard. Imagine someone being thankful for the help you expected to give. 

Gender is a very sensitive topic in Russia, and you will find that most people are happy with the “old fashioned” standards of gender roles. This isn’t to say that there are not problems, but for the most part, society accepts and encourages strict gender roles.

Despite the stricter gender roles in Russian society, women do actually yield many powerful positions in society, government, and business. According to a report from Grant Thornton, an international consulting firm, Russia is the top country in the world for the percentage of senior female leadership at 45%. 

Slavic women love attention! Compliments, flowers🌹 and gifts.
Always show up to a date with a large bouquet of flowers. And remember, it must be an odd number of flowers. Bouquets with even number of flowers are used for funerals.
And then, let us talk about gifts. Gift giving is central in Slavic culture. You bring a gift every time you visit someone, and you should try to shower your woman with gifts. They do not have to be expensive gifts, it is the thought and the attention that counts.
Very early in our relationship, my Russian wife told me this; «Terje, whenever you buy something for someone else, you should buy something for me as well». And that is what I have done since.
If I buy a gift for my mother, my daughters or a friend, I also buy a small present for my wife. It works very well 😄
Remember, when you are in a relationship with a Slavic woman, you can never buy too many gifts!

Today we will talk about Russian superstitions. Some of them you might recognize, others are important to know about when you are dating a woman from Eastern Europe.
1. Russians believe that shaking hands or kissing a guest across a doorway is a big no-no. In Russian folklore, the threshold is where the "house spirit" is believed to reside, and bridging this gap with a handshake is therefore extremely bad luck.
2. It's never a mistake to take a bouquet of flowers when invited to someone's home or for a birthday or other celebration. However, make sure that bouquets for such festive occasions are filled with an odd number of flowers. Bouquets with an even numbers of flowers are reserved for funerals.
3. Before embarking on any journey, superstition dictates that all members of the group should sit down in silence — even if not everyone is traveling. This doesn't have to be for a long time, but will ensure that the trip is a safe one. It's also a good opportunity to make sure you have everything you need for the journey.
4. According to Russian superstition, spilling salt will lead to an argument between family members. Better stick to pepper then.
5. Whistling indoors in Russia is considered bad luck and will lead to financial problems — or so superstition has it.
6. You should never wish a Russian a "happy birthday" before their actual birthday because it's considered bad luck. In the same way, you should never celebrate your birthday before the actual day.
7. It often seems that there are only about 10 names in Russian. Nearly every woman you meet is Natalya, Elena or Svetlana. There is a superstition related to meeting people who have the same name, but fortunately — as it happens so often — this superstition brings good, rather than bad, luck. If you find yourself sitting between two people with the same name then you should make a wish — but don't tell anyone, otherwise it won't come true.
8. Do not return home to get something you have forgotten. Returning to pick up something you forgot is considered a bad omen in Russia. However, if you cannot travel without the item you must look in the mirror before leaving your room again to make everything better.

The last scam we will talk about for now is the «Pay per minute» or «Pay per message» scam.

You have met this nice lady on an Eastern European dating site, and she suggest you move to another site. Or, you have met her directly on one of the scam sites. Either way, this website charges you for each message you send to her, or it charges you by the minute for video calls. Or both.
This woman will encourage you to chat with her/have video calls with her. Her answers or messages to you will often be vague/very short so you will have to pay more to understand what she is really trying to say. If you ask her about her address/phone number she will be very reluctant to disclose it to you. Giving you some shady explanation of why she cannot do it.

You are being scammed.
This woman works on commission for the website you are on. The more money you spend (together with all the other men she is communicating with) the more money she makes. These women are most often happily married. This is just their job.

Chivalry is not dead!

Well, to be honest, it might feel that way if you’re a man living in Western Europe. Even if it’s not dead, it is surely not appreciated or even expected. Maybe you feel the way I felt?

What are Russians not able to live without when travelling?
In a recent poll, people were asked which things, except tickets, mobile phones, documents and money, they would never be able to travel without.
 
29% said that their medicines were the most necessary trip essentials (Are they really that sick?)
18% wouldn’t be able to travel without their photo cameras. (What? Russian cellphones can’t take photos? Come on!)
15% said their laptops (No rest for a Russian)
13% could not do without a book or a magazine (Putin Times being the most popular)
7% could not travel without their favourite music and TV series (Hence the laptops)
5% answered their favourite makeup products (Guessing that would be the women, and the percentage should be much higher)
3% would pack a hair dryer or their sleep masks and earplugs (Doing their hair blindfolded while sleeping)
2% of Russians would bring their own travel pillows or a water boiler (Nothing is worse than missing out on your tea after a sleepless night)

Today we are going to talk about the «Translation scam».
This is also very common on Eastern European dating sites.

Again, you meet a nice woman on a dating site, and she expresses an interest in you. After a short time she asks for your email. Remember, scammers want to move the conversation away from the dating site as quickly as possible. She sends you a nice email, maybe with photos of her. Even very professional looking photos.
Her English is understandable, but not to good.

After a couple of emails back and forth, she tells you that her English is not good at all (but she will attend a course soon), and a friend is helping her translate her emails to you. This is very dufficult for her. But, she knows of this website that could be helpful. This is a very exclusive website, by invitation only. So, she sends you her limited invitation code. Maybe she also tells you about her sister that met an English man online. They used this site, and they are now happily married and living in England.
Once you register on the site by entering the code she gave you, you pay a very small registration fee. Then you get the first message from her in Russian. And there is a button saying «Translate». Once you press this button, you are informed that you have to pay for «professional translation» of her message.
This goes both ways, so you also have to pay to translate messages you send to her. And you pay per word.
And it gets very expensive very quickly.

This woman is working for this website, and the «invitation» code she gave you is her ID on this site. Used, so she can recieve a percentage of what you pay to translate messages between you and her. And she will be communicating with many other men. STOP!
