Last week I attended a funeral for a friend. We had become closer in Covid times and spent lovely times on walks and (a few) other outings, phone calls and messages.
What surprised me, was my reaction after the funeral. I got home and fell asleep. I was tired and sad and could not muster any energy to make dinner or go for a walk. I ended up reading a book (about insects!) while eating chocolate and ice cream.
Basically the whole week I was not my best self. I got irritated with myself and started to condemn myself - until I realized that I had forgotten what I tell clients so many times:
"Grief takes time and energy. Grief is physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually exhausting. It's important to take time to grief, to find comfort and rest."
I am grieving, and it's ok. I miss her. I have to make peace with the thought of never again going together to the Chinese Buffet in town or for a walk in the Gardens. I miss her excitement about life, her joy in small things and her encouragement and understanding.
It's ok to grieve.
