Fourth lecturer announcement for the 2025 winter school: Sergey Alyaev!

Sergey Alyaev is a Senior Researcher at NORCE Norwegian Research Centre Energy in Bergen working on interdisciplinary research within machine learning uncertainty quantification and geosciences. He holds an MSc and a PhD in Applied and Computational Mathematics from the University of Bergen. At NORCE, he coordinates efforts in geosteering and leads a JIP, “DISTINGUISH,” where the team combines generative modeling of geology, inverse problems, and decision optimization for geosteering.

Third lecturer announcement for the 2025 winter school: Chris Rackauckas!

Dr. Chris Rackauckas is the VP of Modeling and Simulation at JuliaHub, the Director of Scientific Research at Pumas-AI, Co-PI of the Julia Lab at MIT, and the lead developer of the SciML Open Source Software Organization. For his work in mechanistic machine learning, his work is credited for the 15,000x acceleration of NASA Launch Services simulations and recently demonstrated a 60x-570x acceleration over Modelica tools in HVAC simulation, earning Chris the US Air Force Artificial Intelligence Accelerator Scientific Excellence Award. He is the lead developer of the Pumas project and has received a top presentation award at every ACoP in the last 3 years for improving methods for uncertainty quantification, automated GPU acceleration of nonlinear mixed effects modeling (NLME), and machine learning assisted construction of NLME models with DeepNLME. For these achievements, Chris received the Emerging Scientist award from ISoP, the highest early career award in pharmacometrics.

Second lecturer announcement for the 2025 winter school: Adrian Kirkeby!

Adrian Kirkeby has a PhD in applied mathematics from NTNU and the Technical University of Denmark with focus on theory and solution methods for inverse problems for problems governed by partial differential equations. He has experience from industry and the government research sector, and currently works as a postdoc at Simula Research Laboratory in Oslo.

In the next few weeks we'll be presenting our 2025 lecturers.

First out is Giovanni S. Alberti!

Giovanni S. Alberti is a professor in mathematical analysis at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Genoa, and a member of MaLGa, the Machine Learning Genoa Center. He received his PhD at the University of Oxford, and held two post-doctoral positions at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris and at ETH Zürich. His research focuses on partial differential equations, applied harmonic analysis, inverse problems and machine learning. He was the recipient of the Gioacchino Iapichino prize for Mathematical Analysis in 2017, of the Eurasian Association on Inverse Problems Young Scientist Award for distinguished contributions to inverse problems in 2018, and of a ERC Starting Grant 2021.

All models are wrong, but some are useful - especially those obtained from inverse modelling.

Inverse problems involve determining the underlying causes or parameters from observed effects. This is essential for understanding complex systems where direct measurements are either challenging or impossible, like medical imaging, geophysics, astronomy, computer vision, material science, etc.

Join us at Dr. Holms Hotel for a week-long deep dive into recent trends in inverse problems!

P.S.: As usual, each day offers a break with ample time for networking and skiing in the beautiful mountains of Geilo - a perfect way to digest the scientific input 👌

The 24th edition of the Geilo Winter School, on graphs and applications, is officially over! We had a great time learning about tools and theory, exchanging knowledge and opinions, presenting our work and we even had a competition!

The lecturers this year were Benjamin Ricaud, Mridul Seth and Raghavendra Selvan.

Our final lecturer of 2024 is Fredrik Manne!

He is a professor at the Department of Informatics, University of Bergen. He is a member of the Algorithms group specializing in designing parallel algorithms for problems motivated from combinatorial scientific computing. This includes problems such as matching, coloring, and other fundamental issues on graphs. A recent field of interest is the use of graph neural networks to solve combinatorial problems on graphs.

Our third lecturer this year is Raghavendra Selvan!

He is currently an Assistant Professor at Machine Learning (ML) Section, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Copenhagen. He is also affiliated with Department of Neuroscience and the Data Science Laboratory. His current research interests are broadly pertaining Resource Efficient ML, Medical Image Analysis with ML, and Graph Neural Networks. Of late, another overarching theme of his research interests lie at the intersection of sustainability and ML where he is interested in investigating sustainability with ML, and also the sustainability of ML.

The second lecturer we're presenting this year is Benjamin Ricaud!

Benjamin Ricaud is associate professor at the Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø. He is a member of the machine learning group at UiT. His research topics are related to machine learning, graphs and graph machine learning. Prior to arriving in Norway two years ago, he was a researcher at EPFL, Switzerland, where he contributed to developing graph signal processing and graph machine learning.

Mridul is a core developer of NetworkX and currently working on the project funded through a grant (EOSS) from Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. He is also collaborating with folks from the Scientific Python project and Anaconda to help develop and maintain the broader Scientific Open Source ecosystem. To share his love of Python and Network Science, he has presented workshops at multiple conferences like PyCon, (Euro)SciPy, PyData London and many more!
