Elverum videregående skole would like to invite your students to the World Scholar’s Cup held in Elverum, February 29- March 1, 2020

What do students say about the World Scholar's Cup? “You’ll have a great experience. You’ll make new friends and learn from other people. Even though you’ll have to study a lot and research a lot, you’ll love doing it.”

“Is it challenging? Yes. Can it be frightening? Yes. Will it be fun? Absolutely. Welcome to the World Scholar’s Cup; welcome to the greatest festival of learning in the world.”

Your students have the opportunity to compete and participate in an international competition. The entire competition is in English so (it is) an excellent chance for them to test their English language skills as well as their academic knowledge. This is a great opportunity to introduce students to debating. Two-thirds of competitors have never debated before, and over half of all students who participate worldwide in the World Scholar’s Cup events have English as a second language.

As a host school we are cooperating with Elverum kommune, and therefore we will be expecting teams from both lower and upper secondary level to participate. The World Scholar’s Cup has been arranged at Elverum videregående skole since 2016.

The World Scholar’s Cup is an exciting event that, while also a competition, is an opportunity for students to apply what they know to real world issues.

Students will take part in teams of three in either a Junior or a Senior category.

Only students who will be 14 or younger on July 1, 2020 can participate in the Junior Division. Any team with at least one student who will be 15 or older on July 1, 2020 is
considered a Senior Division team.

In each category, there will be four different Skill-Building events:

1. Debate: You may be arguing ‘That parents should have the right to implant GPS trackers in their children’ or whether ‘women make better superheroes’. Each
speaker speaks for 4 minutes. Each team debates three times.

2. Writing: Each team member will choose a topic and write a persuasive essay. They can help each other but each writes an individual essay. They have 85
minutes to complete their essay.

3. Bowl: Team members work together to answer multiple-choice questions displayed on a large screen. Teams use an electronic ‘clicker’ to submit their answers. The event will be held in the auditorium.

4. Challenge: The Scholar’s Challenge is a multiple choice exam given to each individual competitor to complete within 60 seconds.
