The Basque people, who live in a corner between northern Spain and southwestern France, speak one of the biggest linguistic mysteries on the planet. Their language, Euskara, is what linguists call a language isolate, not related to any known language.
It isn’t related to Spanish, French, or any other known language family. In fact, it’s the last surviving pre-Indo-European language in Western Europe, a living fossil that has somehow made it all the way to the 21st century while its ancient neighbors disappeared.
A whole language with no known relatives? For linguists, that’s the equivalent of finding a dragon in your backyard.
