Have you heard of Risso dolphins before? 🐬 This species has been observed more and more these past years in northern Norway 🌊👀😍 In collaboration with Sea Safari Andenes / Whale2Sea and Whalesafari Andenes - Hvalsafari Andenes, we started cataloguing individuals to better understand who they are and where they come from 🧐 Alexander Eckerle and Femke de Ruiter presented our work on this cool species at the conference of the European Cetacean Society last week! We can't wait for more sightings and work on the publication! Stay tuned! 😊 🐬

BATMAN ID-0570: The one with a mask
This gentleman has a very distinctive fluke and has been observed over several years, first time in June 2012! He is mostly observed during the summer, but in 2020, he was here in March. This year he was seen both in January and in August/September and was hanging out with Curly (ID-0442). Can you see that Batman’s tail looks like bat wings? 📸 by:

Lately we have seen many Risso’s dolphins on our trips. This beautiful animal was first spotted off Andøya in 2017, so a pretty newcomer in our area.

Watching the orca hunt is spectacular. The great black backed gull with a young one is hoping for a meal from this hunt.

Whalesafari Andenes (Hvalsafari AS)

Our Whale centre is located by the lighthouse in Andenes, Vesterålen, in northern Norway. Here the continental shelf lies closer to land than anywhere else along the Norwegian coast, making Andenes ideal for whale watching. The s***m whale, which is the largest toothed whales, typically feeds on deep sea squids and fish along the edge of the continental shelf. To help us locate the s***m whales, our boats are equipped with hydrophones (under water microphones): we can therefore listen to the clicking sounds that the s***m whale produces to communicate, navigate and to search for their prey. With the aid of these hydrophones, we can locate the whale whilst he is still under water and approach it with minimal impact on the animal. We occasionally see other species of whales on our safaris such as killer whales (orcas), minke whales, pilot whales, dolphins, fin whales and humpback whales.

Our guides at the Whale centre and on board our vessels are biologists and students from many different countries. The tourists can also learn more about the whales that we encounter from our guided tour in the museum, which is complementary in every whale safari ticket.

Research on living whales has been important to us since the establishment of the Whale Centre in 1989. We have researchers present onboard the vessels and they study the behaviour and the population biology of the whales that we encounter. Whalesafari Ltd. offers researchers from different universities to stay and use the facilities connected to the centre.

Since we have a sighting rate of 99% on our safaris, we can offer you a whale guarantee on our trips: we will offer you a new trip for free or your ticket reimbursed if we cannot locate any cetacean on the trip. So you actually have a 100% whale guarantee.

We tailor travel packages from Tromsø to Lofoten with activities, transportation, accommodation and more. You can book a package by visiting our web page or writing to [email protected].

Our summer season starts in May and lasts until September, while the winter season is from December to April. For information about trips, please check out our website or contact us via email or phone.
