We verwelkomen Hanka Clout als docent klarinet bij de opleiding Classical Music van het ArtEZ Conservatorium in Zwolle.

Hanka is musicus bij het Noord Nederlands Orkest en het Amsterdam Wind Quintet en heeft daarnaast een brede praktijk opgebouwd in kamermuziek, educatie en begeleiding van jonge musici. Ze speelde onder meer in Het Zwols Collectief en verschillende andere Nederlandse toporkesten.

In haar onderwijs legt Hanka de nadruk op vakmanschap, discipline en het ontwikkelen van een eigen muzikale stem: “Wat ik belangrijk vind om studenten mee te geven, is discipline als basis — om van daaruit uit te groeien tot een musicus met een eigen stijl en persoonlijkheid.”

Daarbij stimuleert ze studenten om veel samen te spelen, concerten te bezoeken en zich te blijven voeden met andere musici en muziekstijlen: “Focus is goed, maar hou je blik wijd open.”

The Executive Board has appointed Wiebren Buma as director of ArtEZ Academy of Music in Zwolle. Wiebren will take up the position on 1 September, succeeding Sigrid van Willigen, who has served as interim director over the past period. We would like to thank Sigrid for her great commitment and dedication.

With Wiebren's appointment, the management team of ArtEZ Academy of Music is once again complete. We are delighted to welcome a director who knows the academy, the region and the cultural sector well. Drawing on his extensive experience in both the cultural sector and higher arts education, he is ideally placed to work with staff, students and partners to continue shaping the future of ArtEZ Academy of Music in Zwolle.

Rob Kramer, member of the ArtEZ Conservatory board: “Over the years, I’ve come to know Wiebren in various roles as someone who is very strong in terms of musical substance and, at the same time, has a gift for bringing together diverse perspectives in an affable manner and providing direction. His strength lies not in forcing change, but in building support through substance, connection, and an open attitude.”

Wiebren Buma (1973) studied Classical Trumpet and Choral Conducting at ArtEZ Academy of Music in Zwolle. He went on to work as a musician, conductor and lecturer in the Zwolle and Deventer region. In 2004, he moved into arts management at the National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands (NJO), where he held various positions contributing to the development of the NJO Summer Academy and the NJO Music Summer, most recently as director.

He later became director of an arts centre in Deventer and subsequently director of Het Gelders Orkest, where he prepared the merger with Orkest van het Oosten that resulted in the present-day Phion. He then moved with his family to Sneek, where he led Cultuur Kwartier Sneek, which includes Theatre Sneek, the Bolwerk music venue and Atrium Arts Centre. Since 2025, he has been programme manager at the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen.

For Wiebren, this appointment represents not only a new challenge but also a return to the region where his career began: "I'm incredibly excited to get started in Zwolle and to help ensure that ArtEZ Academy of Music remains a vibrant place, visible and closely connected to the city and the region. This autumn, my family and I will be moving back to Deventer.

Classical Music student Omar Shendy has had one dream since he was fifteen: to become a classical pianist. He took his first piano lesson in his home country Egypt, and this summer he graduates from ArtEZ Academy of Music in Zwolle. ‘I don’t want these four years at the Academy of Music to be over.’

Last week, lovely words appeared in the newspapers about our collaboration with the Nederlands Bach Consort: “Composition students from the ArtEZ Conservatory in Zwolle have been asked to provide the texts with suitable a ca****la choral music. The young composers have very diverse backgrounds, which can only result in a fascinating and varied program.”

🎶 Mozarts Requiem in Zwolle 🎶
Op maandag 18 mei 2026 voert de koorklas van het ArtEZ Conservatorium Zwolle het indrukwekkende Requiem van Mozart uit in de Dominicanenkerk.

Onder leiding van Erik Korterink en samen met musici van het Zwolse Hanzeorkest brengen studenten van Klassieke Muziek en Docent Muziek dit meesterwerk tot leven.
