Why do children love hanging upside down? 🤸♀️
When you see your child dangling from a bench, climbing frame or sofa, it might look like play – but often, it’s their body seeking sensory input!
Vestibular input (balance and movement)
• The vestibular system, located in the inner ear, tells the brain about head position and movement.
• Hanging upside down, swinging, spinning, or rocking stimulates this system.
• This can help children feel more alert or calm, improve balance, and support emotional regulation.
Proprioceptive input (body awareness and joint feedback)
• Proprioception comes from receptors in muscles and joints that tell the brain where the body is in space.
• Activities like gripping tightly, bearing weight, and pulling or pushing provide this feedback.
• This helps children develop body awareness, feel grounded, and coordinate their movements more effectively.
For many neurodivergent children, these types of sensory play support self-regulation and help them connect more comfortably with their environment.
