The cotton pygmy goose (Nettapus coromandelianus), also known as the cotton teal, is a fascinating species that bridges the worlds of wild tropical wetlands and highly specialized aviculture. Despite its common name, it is biologically a tiny perching duck with a unique, goose-like bill structure.
Two distinct subspecies exist. The nominate race, N. c. coromandelianus, is widely distributed across Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Southeast Asia, and New Guinea. The larger subspecies, N. c. albipennis, is native to coastal eastern Australia.
Breeding is synchronized with seasonal monsoon rains. They form monogamous pairs and are secondary cavity nesters, selecting deep hollows in mature trees standing in or near water. A female lays a clutch of 6 to 12 ivory-colored eggs.
In aviculture, the cotton pygmy goose occupies a legendary status due to its extreme delicacy and specific husbandry challenges. This species was long considered nearly impossible to propagate in captivity. The breakthrough occurred in 1978, when the New York Zoological Society (now WCS) achieved the world's first captive breeding. A decade later, in 1989, aviculturist Bill Makins recorded the first successful breeding in the United Kingdom.
They remain exceptionally rare in private collections and zoos. They are highly sensitive to stress and dietary deficiencies. Unlike African pygmy geese, cotton pygmy geese are slightly more winter-hardy, but they still require dedicated indoor housing or heated shelters when temperatures drop to freezing.
Replicating their natural diet in captivity requires precise management. Aviculturists must provide specialized, high-protein floating pellets blended with natural greens like duckweed and algae.
Breeding them requires spacious, sunny aviaries with expansive ponds and raised, specialized nest boxes. Raising the ducklings is the most difficult phase; newly hatched downies often refuse artificial food. Successful breeders often have to simulate natural feeding behaviors (such as moving fingers in the water to create ripples) or rely on specialized tube-feeding methods during the first critical weeks.
