Join me and Amy Eicher talk about her experience with pain and all the nuggets of wisdom that she has to share with us.

This is for you if:

- you also live with pain and want to hear someone else's story
- you're a clinician interested in what people living in pain actually go through
- you are interested in pain and just want to learn more, or
- All of the above!

Thanks so much to Amy for giving up her time to share her story with us.

Go follow her! , www.restoringvenus.com

DO YOU WANT TO SHARE YOUR STORY?

If you are also interested in sharing your story with me, I would love to interview you!

You only share as much as you are comfortable sharing.

I know it can be hard to share such an intimate and difficult experience in such a public way and I totally get that. Talking about your pain experience can be really hard, especially when you feel like you're stuck right in the middle of it. But think about what it would have been like for you to hear someone's story that you could relate to when you were in some of your darker moments. Don't underestimate the power of connecting, sharing and allowing yourself to be vulnerable. This is a great opportunity for you to share your story and help others feel less alone.

Just send me a message if you would like to do this or have any questions!

Thanks for reading and hope you have a lovely day.

📣New Blog is up on the website! 📣

I often get asked if I'm trying to be a psychologist. The grayness of the professional lines and boundaries can be confusing at times for colleagues, clients and friends alike.

I'm not a psychologist, but maybe sometimes I resemble the idea that people have of what a psychologist is/does. Hard to say exactly.

Grayness and blurriness are hard for us humans to cope with sometimes. It makes us uncomfortable and I get that.

Not being able to deal with that discomfort though, can get us into trouble.

When healthcare providers think that fully embracing the human sitting in front of them means stepping over the line or working outside of their scope, we do a disservice to our clients and the people coming to us for help.

I'm not a psychologist, but I'm not afraid to acknowledge the person sitting in front of me and all that that entails. I believe that so much that I found training to help me acquire the skills necessary to do that. Because that's my job.

If you want to read more about my thoughts about working as a pain coach and why I work that way I do, check out the blog!

Let me know what you think!

What do you think about physiotherapists learning about psychological frameworks?

Do you think working with persistent pain requires specialization beyond traditional physiotherapy or other healthcare educations?

I want to interview you! Are you interested in sharing your story to help others going through something similar?

My aim is to conduct interviews with people living with persistent pain (of all kinds) to:

- Help others with persistent pain feel less alone
- Help others with persistent pain find comfort in the hearing the story of someone going/gone through something similar
- Help healthcare practitioners understand where they can do better
- Give people a chance to learn more about living with persistent pain

I would like conduct interviews of 30-60 minutes and ask a series of questions like:

What is it like living with your condition?
How do you describe your condition to others?
What were your best and worst experiences in healthcare?
What do you think of physiotherapy and how it can help you?
What do you see for your future?

*This is a rough idea of the questions I want to ask, I may add or adjust some of them.

If you are interested, you would need to be comfortable with:

- Sharing your story in public
- Showing up on video, that will be posted to various social media outlets like youtube, Instagram, and twitter and LinkedIn.
- Sharing your first name

*If this doesn't feel okay for you we can discuss an audio only option and anonymizing your name.

If you would like to participate and be interviewed by me, please send me an email at: [email protected] so we can set up a time that works for you.

As a thank you for giving your time to help me and other healthcare practitioners learn from your experience I would like to offer you a free coaching session of 60 minutes. (You do not have to take this, only if you would like to).

Well, if that doesn't just sum it up, I don't know what does!

This quote is from Steven Hayes, founder of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

This is exactly what I'm trying to bring into my work all the time. The human element of healthcare is so often missed and it can often be the most profound part of moving forward.

Client and practitioner, working alongside each other trying to use two bodies of knowledge in a way they can work together!

Beautiful!

📣 Informed consent is always important!⠀

Before any treatment/diagnostic procedure type you receive whether it's massage, manipulations, dry-needling, ultrasound, chemotherapy, surgery, or an MRI scan, it's important that you know the following:⠀

▶️ What the treatment/procedure consists of;⠀
▶️ What are the possible risks;⠀
▶️ What are the possible benefits.⠀

In order to be a part of the decision making process, you need to know what your options are and why they may or may not be of service to you. ⠀

Remember that it's your body and you are the most important decision maker when it comes to your health and rehabilitation. ⠀

If you're unsure ask! ⠀

If it's still unclear ask your healthcare provider to send you some resources so that you can read yourself about what the implications for your own health might be. ⠀

Stay informed - Stay in the driver's seat of your own healthcare!⠀

Super happy to share that my good friend and colleague Christine Petrides will be joining Pain Geeks!

Christine runs the insta and is a physiotherapist living in Amsterdam.

She's an MSK therapist and now specialises in collaborating with people experiencing persistent pain.

She'll be working on the monthly reading, finding you some great resources that will add to our knowledge and challenge us to think outside the box we inherited from our professional courses.

Next month she's found some special resources and a real treat for people interested in the biopsychosocial model!

You'll see her at the discussions and she will also be making sure the Instagram is awesome.

You can't SEE pain! ⠀
⠀
You can't see pain on an MRI either! ⠀
⠀
The only thing you see on an MRI are structures that may or may not be correlated with your pain. ⠀
⠀
What ends of happening is that structures get blamed for our pain, whether or not the likelihood for that is high. ⠀
⠀
This happens for a lot of reasons, but I think a lot of it has to do with our difficulties of sitting with the unknown. This goes for both patients and clinicians.
⠀
Pain is a complex phenomenon/lived experienced. Not only that, pain is a learned experience wrapped up in a lot a nuance in how we understand and move through our world.⠀
⠀
It's easy to blame structure. If we blame structures we feel as if we are in control. But what if your pain has to do with more than just a picture, more than just a structure, but with your whole experience as a human? ⠀
⠀
How would you make sense of your pain then? ⠀

Some Pain Ponderings... ⠀

We like to make connections between our tissues and our feelings. ⠀

But...what does it all mean? ⠀

Pain is an experience, like emotions, like sensations, like thoughts, like ideas, like beliefs. ⠀

Stemming from how we make meaning of the world and how we understand the things we interact with, be it our: thoughts, sensations, emotions, beliefs, ideas etc... ⠀

I know this can sound like some wishy-washy abstract s**t, and I'm sorry for that. ⠀

So much of what we know about pain is that it doesn't correlate with tissue damage, that it's super subjective, everyone's experience of it is different, and ultimately that we don't know that much about it. ⠀

So if that's case, what is it that we can do about or with pain to help us change our relationship to it? ⠀

If pain is getting in the way of our lives, what does that say about our relationship with pain? How does that reflect back to us what our beliefs and values and meaning structures are in our lives? ⠀

How can we interact with it differently? How can we shift our perspective, so that we may be able to see things in a new way or from a different angle. How can we then integrate those observations so that we can start to change the way we do things, the way that we exist in relation to our pain?⠀

What are your pain ponderings?⠀
