Don’t throw that desert date seed away just yet. 👀

Meet Green Desert from the University of Abuja in Nigeria.

Using simple, locally accessible processing techniques, the team is helping communities unlock the value of desert date waste while creating new sources of income.

“Where we have challenges, new opportunities abound, but it takes the conscious mind of the team to unravel them.”

Groundnut, cowpea and maize are stronger together. 🌽

Meet Gancax Pro from USSEIN in Senegal.

Instead of relying on a single crop, the team combines different plants with compost and drip irrigation to restore salt-damaged soils and help farmers build more resilient harvests.

“Innovation does not necessarily mean creating solutions that have never existed before. Instead, it means understanding what people genuinely need but still lack.”

Soy leftovers + poultry manure = healthier soil? 🐔

Meet FertiSoyaPlus from the National University of Agriculture in Benin.

The team combines overlooked local resources with natural pest protection to help small-scale farmers improve their soils while relying less on chemical inputs.

“We learned that agricultural innovation cannot be built in isolation. Involving local market gardeners from the first trials brought valuable field expertise to our scientific approach and helped us improve the quality of our product.”

This cabbage isn’t headed for the bin. It’s headed for the feed trough. 🥬

Meet FermentaFuture from the University of Eldoret in Kenya.

Using microbial fermentation, the team transforms surplus cabbage and market waste into nutritious livestock feed, creating value from food that might otherwise be discarded.

“Great success happens through collaboration with like-minded people who carry the same weight of an innovation despite interdisciplinary differences.”

You may know luffa as a sponge. But did you know it can also end up on your plate? 🌿

Meet EverGreen from Đại học Trà Vinh in Vietnam.

The team is helping farmers make the most of luffa at every stage: as nutritious food when fresh and a natural material for eco-friendly products and filters when overripe.

“This experience gave us the confidence to believe that young people in the Mekong Delta don’t have to wait for opportunities—we can create them.”

There’s more to this cactus than meets the eye. 🌵

Meet Eureka from Wollo University in Ethiopia.

While many see cactus simply as a sign of drought, Eureka sees a crop with untapped potential: one that can provide food, feed livestock and thrive when water is scarce.

“Our biggest unexpected learning was that the cactus itself was not the main challenge. Perception was. Many people viewed it only as a symbol of drought and poverty, rather than a valuable climate-resilient resource.”

This isn’t your usual farmers’ market. It takes place right on the farm. 🌾

Meet Ekolestari from Universitas Brawijaya in Indonesia.

Through on-farm events and markets, the team helps consumers discover the value of diverse rice farming while creating new opportunities for ecologically minded farmers.

“We never imagined that so many farmers were actually interested in adopting regenerative farming methods, but most of them don’t have land to cultivate.”

Safer, more sustainable palm oil starts with the people who produce it. 🌴

Meet EcoPalm Nexus from ESALQ-USP in Brazil.

Their approach helps artisanal producers improve quality and transparency, while agroforestry and composting bring benefits back to the land.

“We learned that before developing a digital platform or educational materials, we first needed to understand the realities of artisanal palm oil production. Empathy and active listening were essential to creating something truly useful.”

Too much salt in the soil. Too little water when crops need it. 💧

Meet Eco-Aqua Alliance from Can Tho University in Vietnam.

Their solution manages water above and below the soil, helping farmers protect crops from salinity and drought while using water more efficiently.

“That challenge forced me to learn to think flexibly, always have a backup plan, and understand that a successful solution requires not only creativity but, more importantly, sustained execution.”
