On this page I share posts and videos about this topic. Willkommen, Welcome, Benvenuti, Bienvenues, Welkom...

At "Ute's International Lounge" (utesinternationallounge.com) and within my Academy, I support internationally mobile individuals and families in building a fulfilling and sustainable life abroad. My work is guided by my framework, The Sustainable Multilingual, which focuses on on maintai

ning and developing multiple languages and cultures in a balanced, realistic, and long-term way. It is about preserving your linguistic and cultural roots while confidently embracing new ones, without pressure for perfection, but with clarity, purpose, and sustainability. As a multilingual Language Consultant, Intercultural Communication Expert, linguist, and author with a PhD in Romance Philology, and as a mother of three already adult children, I combine professional expertise with lived experience. I understand both the challenges and the opportunities that come with an international lifestyle. My goal is to help you find your own authentic way of integrating languages, cultures, values, and ways of living so that you and your family can truly thrive. You are welcome to post in German, Italian, French, Dutch, English, or Spanish: these are the languages I can actively respond in. You may also use any other language you feel most comfortable with; we will find ways to understand each other as a community. I look forward to connecting with you.

Switzerland is a multilingual country, but this doesn't mean that every national language is understood and represented to the same extent everywhere...

I personally just like chatting with people and finding out how far a conversation can go even if we don't share a language 😎🌍🌎🌏

🇨🇭 What if a holiday is one of the most powerful language-learning experiences your child can have?

Switzerland has four national languages, but that’s only part of the story.
Many Swiss people grow up speaking regional varieties, such as Swiss German dialects, in their daily lives AND the standard variety...

For many Swiss families living abroad, however, it is often the standard variety that is passed on to their children rather than a regional variety or dialect. Others maintain both. Every family’s language journey is different.

Then they visit Switzerland.

Suddenly, they hear regional varieties everywhere: with grandparents, cousins, neighbours, on the playground, at the bakery, on the train. They experience the rich linguistic diversity of Switzerland firsthand.

This is what I call sustainable multilingualism.

Languages are sustained through meaningful relationships and authentic experiences. Children don’t only learn a language: they learn how it is lived, adapted, and shared across different people and places.

A two-week visit won’t replace everyday exposure, but regular immersion experiences can strengthen language skills, confidence, identity, and family bonds.

🌿Sustainable multilingualism isn’t about perfect fluency.

It’s about creating a multilingual life where every opportunity to connect with people and places helps languages thrive across borders and across generations. 🌿

Have your children discovered new varieties or dialects of their heritage language when visiting family or friends?

For those who are looking for more natural ways to stay cool these days...

Although we all may long for a warm summer, when the temperature get too high, we look for ways to stay cool.

Sometimes, supporting our children’s language development is not about doing more, but about responding differently.

– Repeat

– Expand

– Recast

In this article, I explore three simple discourse strategies that can make everyday conversations richer, more supportive, and more powerful for multilingual children.

Small moments. Big impact.

How do you usually respond when your child says something unexpected, incomplete, or “not quite right”?

Marjolein Hageman.
