Where is everybody?
The Fermi paradox
During a live online event I asked the panel members, who where all scientists in astronomy, what they thought about the Fermi Paradox. I asked the question without explaining the paradox, without giving my thoughts about it. I did that with a reason, I didn't want them to react on me. I wanted to hear their thoughts.
But, they told me it isn't really a paradox and didn't agree with Fermi his ideas. So here I want to give it to you, for you to decide.
Okay sofar. Then what is the Fermi paradox and who is Fermi?
The universe is so huge, there should be intelligent life out there. But,.....where is everybody? This is the main question and paradox. This huge space, huge universe, is it that empty? Are we alone?
Possibilities:
● life is incredible rare
● intelligent civilizations destroy themselves before they can explore the universe
● They are there, but hiding
I think that life is certanly very, very rare. It is one of the wonders of the universe. Maybe the biggest wonder of all. It all started with hydrogen and helium after the big bang and billions of years later, here we are. Very complex life forms, intelligent life.
Before we or any other civilization will explore the universe it needs to develop to a certain level. And we are not there yet. We are still an agressive, violent, destructive species that feels the need to conquer. And we know how that went on Earth. We should not conquer. Space is not to conquer. Space is to explore, to learn.
Other species maybe survived and not destroyed themself but developed themself to a higher level. And yes, then they are smart, intelligent enough to know they should hide, not driven by fear but because they don't want to interfere. And do not what we did; invite aliens to our world.
Enrico Fermi was a Nobel Prize-winning physicist who predicted the existence of neutrinos and helped create the first artificial nuclear reactor. He was known to pose simple but seemingly unanswerable questions.
Fermi's argument : the timescale to spread around the galaxy is much shorter then the time scale to evolve intelligence. So, the fact that aliens aren't here and weren't here long time ago, when we were at the level of slime balls is telling us that we probably are alone, at least in our galaxy.
