Lecture Martine Meuwese: The Utrecht Pontifical Puzzle In this Utrecht University Centre for Medieval Studies lecture, Martine Meuwese will address the puzzle of the medieval Pontifical of Saint Mary and its iconography.

Bachelorstudenten Kunstgeschiedenis op onze jaarlijkse excursie naar Berlijn en Firenze. Onder vakkundige begeleiding van Steyn Bergs, Eveline Deneer, Matthijs Jonker , Daantje Meuwissen , Martijn van Beek , Michael W. Kwakkelstein

Onderzoek en onderwijs op locatie: vandaag werden alle eerstejaarsstudenten Kunstgeschiedenis van de Utrecht University zeer gastvrij ontvangen in het Singer Museum in Laren.

Conservator Suzanne Veldink gaf ons een inzichtelijk gastcollege over de nieuwe tentoonstelling ‘De werelden van Jan Toorop’. Hoe kwam deze tentoonstelling tot stand? Welk verhaal wordt er over Toorop verteld? En hoe lukte het om een beeld van George Minne op een foto van Toorops atelier te identificeren?

Daarna gingen we de werken bekijken - en erover in gesprek. Het bezoek smaakt naar meer: hopelijk brengt de toekomst meer samenwerkingen tussen het Singer en de universiteit!

De tentoonstelling Water & Licht in het Dordrechts Museum is de moeite waard: dankzij de samenwerking met het Yale Center for British Art zijn zelden getoonde werken van J.M.W. Turner uit de Paul Mellon Collection nu in Dordrecht te zien. Het hoogtepunt, Dort, or Dordrecht: The Dort Packet-Boat from Rotterdam Becalmed, schittert op de plek waar het ooit zijn oorsprong vond — een bijzondere ervaring om dit kunstwerk hier te mogen zien. De tentoonstelling laat prachtig zien hoe Turner water verbeeldt als zowel verstild lichtspel als ontembare kracht. En!: conservator Quirine van der Meer Mohr, alumna van onze Research Master Art History, stelde deze tentoonstelling samen.

Xiaobai Chen is a PhD candidate in Architectural History at the Utrecht Art History dept. The PhD research mainly focuses on the effectiveness of buffer zones in historic cities nominated as World Cultural Heritage sites under pressures of urban development and expansion. By using 3D simulation and quantitative analytical methods, the study examines four case studies—Macao, Amsterdam, Pingyao, and Liverpool—to evaluate how buffer zones function in protecting the surrounding heritage environment. The research aims to propose new approaches to balancing historic urban development with heritage conservation, and to provide references for future World Heritage protection, management, and heritage policy-making.

Recente Masteralumnus Ralph Zijlemans publiceerde een artikel over zijn onderzoeksresultaten in 'Madoc. Tijdschrift over de Middeleeuwen'. Gefeliciteerd Ralph!

Sanne Frequin en Daantje Meuwissen geven een toelichting bij hun onderzoeks- en digitaliseringsproject van de Grote Kerk in Naarden.

🎨✨ Research Master Art History | Student Kimberly Lee worked on a heritage community engaged learning project (CEL) and was a Collections Intern Amsterdam.

During my CEL in 2025, I worked on inventorying and documenting a group of Chinese posters (1979–1983) held at the Wereldmuseum depot. What started as documentation soon raised a bigger question: could these posters become an official part of the museum’s collection?

From September onward, I continued this journey as a Collections Intern, conducting in-depth research on Chinese posters under the supervision of Dr. Willemijn van Noord. Along the way, I gained hands-on experience in provenance research, TMS documentation, and supporting the internal acquisition process for the China collections.

One of the most challenging and rewarding parts of this internship was preparing and presenting the acquisition proposal for the curatorial acquisition meeting—condensing months of research into a clear and convincing case for the posters’ historical and cultural value.

This research ultimately contributed to a new formal acquisition for the museum, a process I was directly responsible for. A meaningful step in turning research into collection history.
