Lunar lessons
Last week I had the pleasure of working as an interpreter at the Amsterdam University of Arts - Academy of Architecture, for the graduation ceremony of Thais Gazzillo Zuchetti, a Brazilian young architect with a bright future ahead of her.
She presented her Master’s thesis about Lunar Architecture. Yes, you read it well. She developed an architectural project for a habitat for humans on the Moon.
It was amazing to see how she integrated challenges of an inhabitable Moon, such as no atmosphere, solar radiation, gravity, temperature extremes, isolation, rotation that is upside down and slower, with a beautiful, comfortable environment, managing to create spaces like a green house, a small museum to be remembered of your purpose on the Moon, a gym, a contemplation room to meditate and gaze up to the Earth and separated environments, what she called “neighborhoods” to work and to live.
She talked about how the Moon is present in our daily lives, our mystical relationship with it, the way some cultures worship it, or how it influences our sowing and harvesting cycles and even something as trivial as how some of us consider the phases of the Moon to have a haircut, for instance.
Although the technological aspect was an essential part of this architectural project, featuring solutions like 3-D printing furniture using Moon’s soil, or windows with ionized microcapsules to dim out the Sun providing a sense of the circadian rhythm, the project is really about taking humanity to the Moon, our cultures, traditions, rituals, values, in order to bond, share knowledge and establish a society there.
I was really proud to see Thais representing Brazil so well!
It was a great assignment.
I love my work!
