Op 13 juni vindt gratis stripfestival weer plaats in onze eigen prachtige bibliotheek hier in Utrecht. Met natuurlijk stripmakers, en ook workshops, lezingen en de uitreiking van de Gouden Mus. Venster is aanwezig met een kraam met studenten en alumni. Spreek ze aan als je vragen hebt over onze opleiding (en koop ze leeg!)
is zo aardig geweest om ons zelfs een ruimte te bieden voor onze toelatingsgesprekken, zodat kandidaten voor de opleiding direct uit ons gesprek live kunnen proeven aan hun toekomstdroom.

🇬🇧 On 13 June, free comic festival will take place once more in our own beautiful library here in Utrecht. Featuring, of course, comic artists, as well as workshops, talks and the presentation of the Gouden Mus award (‘the golden sparrow’). Meet , , , , , .comics and many more inspiring makers. Venster will be there with a stall staffed by students and alumni. Do have a chat with them if you have any questions about our course (and buy them out!)

We are very excited to announce that Sarah Dyer is coming to Utrecht to give a masterclass at Venster Academy!

Sarah Dyer is an artist and picture book maker with a passion for capturing narrative and sequence within her work. She has written and illustrated 14 books, translated internationally. She has been a Bologna Book Fair Winner for the Illustrators exhibition in 2021, and a Finalist in 2026. She has taught up to MA level for 20 years, currently teaching on the Foundation Course at Kingston University.

In the masterclass we will explore sequence and narrative in a quick and playful manner. The emphasis is on experimentation and allowing the surprises to guide you. Starting with abstract marks and gradually defining our visual language over a series of exercises so you come away with a short sequence or narrative at the end of the session.

We zijn erg verheugd om aan te kondigen dat Sarah Dyer naar Utrecht komt om een masterclass te geven bij Venster Academy!

Sarah Dyer is een kunstenaar en prentenboekmaakster met een passie voor het vastleggen van narratief en sequentie binnen haar werk. Ze heeft 14 boeken geschreven en geïllustreerd, die internationaal zijn vertaald. Ze was winnaar van de Bologna Book Fair voor de Illustrators-tentoonstelling in 2021, en was finalist in 2026. Ze heeft 20 jaar lang lesgegeven tot op MA-niveau, en geeft momenteel les op de Foundation Course aan de Kingston University.

Tijdens de masterclass zullen we sequentie en narratief op een snelle en speelse manier verkennen. De nadruk ligt op experimenten en het toelaten dat verrassingen je leiden. We beginnen met abstracte marks en definiëren geleidelijk onze visuele taal via een reeks oefeningen, zodat je aan het einde van de sessie met een korte sequentie of narratief vertrekt.

Dieuwertje: “Angst voor het witte papier, de blokkade om iets af te maken, ergens aan te beginnen. Het lijkt alsof ik een vierkant papier heb ingeslikt waardoor ik alleen nog maar rechtop kan zitten en niet meer mag bewegen. Of is dit wat overdreven? Soms lijkt het zo, is de weerstand te groot, roept de omgeving te hard om aandacht, staat de to do list in de weg, heb ik te veel zorgen om vrij te kunnen denken.”

Dieuwertje ontwikkelde aan de hand van haar research een toolkit voor haarzelf en iedereen die uit een blokkade wil komen.

Dieuwertje: “Fear of the blank page, the mental block that stops you from finishing something or starting anything at all. It feels as though I’ve swallowed a square of paper, so that I can only sit upright and am no longer allowed to move. Or is that a bit of an exaggeration? Sometimes it feels that way: the resistance is too great, the environment demands attention too loudly, the to-do list gets in the way, I have too many worries to be able to think freely.”

Based on her research, Dieuwertje developed a toolkit for herself and anyone who wants to break through a mental block.

🇳🇱 .world.or.nothing kwam dit jaar binnen met een stevige technische basis. Je ziet aan alles dat ze veel heeft getekend, gestudeerd en geoefend. Juist daarom ligt haar uitdaging ergens anders.

In haar werk zijn we aan het zoeken naar meer vrijheid en meer ruimte voor een eigen handschrift. Minder vanuit controle tekenen en meer losheid opzoeken. Dat is best spannend wanneer je gewend bent om dingen ‘goed’ te willen doen.

Veel respect voor hoe Giulia steeds weer terug naar de tekentafel gaat en de wil heeft om dit aan te gaan. Gek is dat eigenlijk, he: hoe het bij sommigen van ons zoveel hard werken vraagt om juist tot wat meer basale principes te komen. Ondertussen liep de puffin met Giulia als maatje mee in haar schetsboek tijdens de afgelopen storytelling modules.

Hier zie je een paar momenten uit het proces terug. Dat vinden we misschien wel het mooiste om te zien bij studenten: niet alleen dat iemand beter wordt, maar dat het werk steeds duidelijker van hèn begint te voelen.

(en gaan wij ooit nog leren ook wat basalere, simpelere instaposts te schrijven? waarschijnlijk niet 😅)

🇬🇧 .world.or.nothing joined us this year with a solid technical foundation. You can tell from everything she does that she has drawn, studied and practiced a great deal. That’s precisely why her challenge lies elsewhere.

In her work, we’re searching for more freedom and more space for her own signature. Less drawing from a place of control and more looseness. That’s quite nerve-wracking when you’re used to wanting to do things ‘right’.

Much respect for how Giulia keeps returning to the drawing board and has the determination to tackle this. It’s strange, really: how for some of us it takes so much hard work to arrive at what are actually quite basic principles. Meanwhile, the puffin accompanied Giulia as a companion in her sketchbook during the recent storytelling modules.

Here, you can see a few moments from the process. That’s perhaps what we love most to see in students: not just that someone is improving, but that the work increasingly feels like it’s coming from them.

(And will we ever learn to write more basic, simpler posts? Probably not 😅)

🇬🇧 Hello again - It’s Majken, back with you for the last week of the Venster Visual Story Challenge with the final prompt : Narrow Escape! ✨

It’s hard to believe we’ve arrived at the final week of the challenge already. Such a wonderful month we’ve had, filled with your funny, touching, unexpected, experimental, sad, exciting, colourful and beautiful stories.

Today we’ll be sharing the final entries from the hosting team. They’ve been such an important part of the challenge, this would not have worked so well without them! Thank you so much: Ehud, Jessamijn, Malu, Geeske, Anne and Niek!

And to all of the participants: It is truly special to get to be a part of your creative journey for a while, to see you solve problems, step outside of your comfort zones, experiment and play with visual storytelling.

🇳🇱 De laatste module van het jaar is begonnen. Vanaf nu start onze nieuwe lichting afstudeerders van de Opleiding Beeldverhaal hun eindproject èn is er elke vrijdag les over de zakelijke kanten van het vak.

Afgelopen vrijdag kregen we bezoek van agente en Corneel de Wilde van voor een uitgebreid en heel eerlijk gesprek over hoe het vak werkt.

Hoe ziet de uitgeefwereld eruit voor en achter de schermen? Hoe benader je een agent of uitgever? Wat verdien je als illustrator, en waaruit bestaat dat precies? Heb je een agent nodig, en hoe werkt dat met commissies? Hoeveel inspraak heb je over je werk?
Alles kwam voorbij. Precies daarom vinden we deze module zo belangrijk: goed werk maken is één ding, maar begrijpen hoe het veld werkt waarin je dat werk straks moet laten landen is net zo zo belangrijk.

🇬🇧 The final module of the year has begun. From now on, our new cohort of graduates from the Visual Storytelling Course will be starting their final projects, and every Friday there will be a class on the business side of the profession.

Last Friday, we were visited by agent and Corneel de Wilde from for an in-depth and very honest discussion about how the industry works.

What does the publishing world look like, both on and off the stage? How do you approach an agent or a publisher? What do you earn as an illustrator, and what exactly does that consist of? Do you need an agent, and how do commissions work? How much say do you have over your work?
We covered it all. That’s exactly why we find this module so important: producing good work is one thing, but understanding how the field works in which you’ll eventually have to launch that work is just as important.
