Today, professor Arnoud-Jan Bijsterveld delivered his valedictory address, marking his official retirement. His farewell lecture was titled “A Radical Choice for Life Stories: History as Narrative Coping”. The auditorium in the Cobbenhagen building was filled to capacity with friends, family, and colleagues who gathered to honor his contributions and bid him farewell.
Although Tilburg University does not have a dedicated history department, Arnoud-Jan played a vital role within our Sociology department. His deep historical knowledge and insight greatly enriched our understanding of society.
To learn more about his work and legacy, take a look at this interview: https://www.tilburguniversity.edu/current/news/departing-professor-arnoud-jan-bijsterveld
Among his many achievements, one standout is his book “House of Memories: Uncovering the Past of a Dutch Jewish Family”, which can be accessed here: https://tilburguniversity.on.worldcat.org/oclc/957546961
Luckily for us, Arnoud-Jan will still show up at the department for supervising his PhD students. It is good to still have you on board, Arnoud-Jan! Thank you for all your work throughout the years!

On February 20, the sociology department together with our friends from TST kicked off the new centre for religion in the public sphere (CRIPS, NL: Centrum voor Religie in de Publieke sfeer). The centre studies how religion and spirituality still play a huge part in a ‘secular’ society. To celebrate Natascha Kienstra (TST) and (TSB) officially opened the symposium ‘Geloof het of niet: religie is overal!’.
Suzanne Klein Schaarsberg (TSB) kicked off with a fun quiz, showing some interesting facts and figures about religion in the meantime. Go Suzanne!
Kees de Groot (TST) talked about religion and spirituality being a part of everyone’s everyday life, whether it is through political talk, football players, or comic books.
After that it was time to introduce the (all-female!) dream team of CRIPS with Jedidja van Boven (TST), (TSB), (TSB), Christel Teekman (TST) and (TSB) talking about the different research plans they have for the near future.
Suzanne then finished the enlightening afternoon by sharing insights from her recent studies into the pluriform ways that spirituality is practiced nowadays.
Oh, and almost forgot! The one and only (TSB) did a tremendous job in making sure every single voice was heard by running around with microphones and talking things together. A true chairman if we ever saw one!
Best of all was the large number of attendees showing up, asking interesting questions on the state of religion in contemporary society.

Our department was present at the protests against the proposed budget cuts to higher education in The Hague. The reason is simple: one of the most unintelligent decisions you could make is spending less money on education.
We are proud to have been among the thousands of people who protested today.
