Most of the children love reading comic strips so why not making your own? During the last 10th workshop the kids managed to draw their fantastic comic strips with pencil and black ink (mostly depicting their May holidays adventures) as wel as selected their own favourite artworks for the closing exhibition.

Our invitation for coming sunday!

Because it was cold and rainy we couldn't go drawing to the park. Instead we did a project inspired by Bo de Jong, an artist/teacher from Middelburg. First we asked children to draw and paint a fantasy landscape with bright watercolors. This become a background. Then they were invited to add several trees with black ink creating the foreground. It was challenging for children to paint those dominant trees on top of their colourful images but then they could observe this magical see-through.

We were in the Municipal Museum in The Hague to see the retrospective exhibition of Karel Appel (1921-2006). First we were watching a short movie in which Karel Appel was painting with quite some action and expression (on music of Thelonious Monk). Then we gave a brief introduction about Karel Appel; what made the biggest impression on kids was that Karel Appel pursued his calling to become artist against the wish of his parents to follow their career of hairdressers. Afterthat we looked at all the paintings, sculptures and drawings. Kids got inspired and were ready to draw their own interpretations of Karel Appel. Visitors gave them applaus and a guard pointed out that their work has been seen in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. Then you're a really good artist;-)

To explain children abstract art we were looking at two art movements: Geometric abstraction and Abstract expressionism. After showing them examples made by Rothko, De Kooning, Barnett Newman, Miró, Kandinsky, Delauney or Anish Kapoor we tackled both abstract approaches by:
1. Drawing a geometric composition based on simple instructions: 'draw 4 lines, 2 small circles, 1 oval shape and 1 undulate line'.
2. Making own expressive artwork based on feelings using watercolour or gouache painting techniques. It’s wonderful to see that each work is totally different and unique!

Voilà, some new visual adventures completed by our children:
1. Make a card with mirroring black (positive) & white (negative) shapes cut out from black paper using white paper as a background.
2. Paint a black background ouside of a tree, instead of doing it opposite way as we usually do.
3. Draw a vase with tulips copying its outlines and paint only the background.
For a change, these results are graphic & minimal!
