Dissertation Design Seminar by Marije Balt
Youth agency, state power and governance: paradoxes in EU foreign policy in the Sahel

On 30 May 2022, Marije Balt will present her Dissertation Design Seminar examining how the scope of EU engagement in the Sahel shapes the framing of youth's role in governance and how this affects EU foreign policy in the region.

Her research focuses on two case studies: Burkina Faso and Mali, both of which have experienced a military coup recently and are dealing with terrorism and violent conflicts.

She takes a closer look at the relational interaction between the EU, African state elites and African youth. The research focuses on the construction of frames and aims to unpack this process by looking inside the box: whom does the EU talk to, invite and engage with and how in the diplomatic arena.

This is from the assumption that not only the EU and its member states, but also the state elites shape and influence how the EU perceives 'the other', in this case African youth.

In addition to interviewing the EU itself and the actors that the EU engages with, both internationally and nationally, a panel will be invited to take part in the research, consisting of youth representatives who have (at least once) been part of the EU diplomatic arena, involved in shaping discourse, policies and/or practice (often through implementation of programmes).
