Interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts preparing young Europeans to advise and assist organisations, institutions and businesses.

European Studies (formerly known as HEBO) began in 1990 as a programme for young europeans interested in an international and multi-lingual career. The programme has evolved over its quarter century, but its mission remains the same. Year in and year out, we help young people develop the knowledge and skills they need to start careers in management, marketing, communications/public relations and/o

r policy advice. Unlike a lot of study programmes, European Studies does not prepare students for one specific career, and with good reason. Today's professionals aren't going to have just one career. Globalisation, automation and computerisation are changing the labour market's needs and that means that professionals need to be able to take on different jobs to succeed and survive. Now, more than ever, you can find truth in an old saying: "It's not the strongest who survive, or even the smartest, but the ones most adaptable to change." This is what ES is all about: learning to adapt to change by developing management, marketing and public policy knowledge - as well as cultural understanding - that never goes out of style, together with professional research and communications skills that will keep you on the cutting edge. That's why our motto is "Employability through Adaptability."

Somebody should have sang ‘Oh what a night,’ because it was something special.

Last night European Studies wrapped up another amazing Intro Week. This week we welcomed over 300 new students with a brand-new programme, put together by lecturers Emma Prins and Zoe Vroege-Baize. One of their many innovations was the idea to wrap up the week with a Karaoke night at the Thai Princess in The Hague. Hundreds turned up and dozens took to the stage, showing a lot of guts and a surprising diversity of musical interests (we heard students sing old school classics like ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ pop hits from the likes of Britney Spears and One Direction, but also at least one Bon Jovi hit that came out before even the teachers at this event were born.’

It was a great bonding experience for everyone and were definitely going to have to do this again. What Will you song next time?

And we’re back!

After a terrific summer vacation that included a healthy social media break, we are back at it here at European Studies.

It’s introduction week and today, we met nearly 300 new students who are starting European Studies (more than we were expecting) and we had a great time.

All students got an introduction to the programme, practical tips, important social safety instructions and a preview of the coming year. Then, they got the chance to meet their classmates and mentors before joining in a massive scavenger hunt around The Hague. Tomorrow and Friday, they have some more adventures and we’ll try to get pictures, but for now we want to thank everyone for coming out and show love to the teachers and students - including our newly named study association .thuas for all their help in pulling this off.

Watch this space because now that we’re back, we’re going to have stuff to share.

We’re still floating on air from Friday’s graduation and we’re not quite done talking about how awesome our graduates are. If you can indulge thus for one more post, we want to tell you about some special prizes that we gave out in an intimate ceremony that was held just before our recent graduation.

Every year, European Studies gets to give out prizes to outstanding students, several of which are made possible with the support of the Kruisinga Foundation, an organisation that supports language learning and provides funds for a variety of activities that take place at European Studies.

During this year’s ceremony, prizes were given to the students with the best overall achievement in foreign language learning in each of our foreign languages (French, German, Spanish and Dutch) and a special prize for best overall results was given to Bianca Tudorache, a well-known figure around our university because of her work with our friends at the Lighthouse, our in-house events unit. We’re grateful to the Kruisinga Foundation for all their support and we’re grateful to have such outstanding students.

Also outstanding is Alex Orion Harrell, who won the Berry Minkman Award, a prize given out to students who write an exceptional reflection on the development of their intercultural skills that is named after the late founder of European Studies and presented, one last time, by his daughter, ES lecturer Marije Minkman.

Congratulations to all of the winners and the rest of our graduates. We can’t wait to see what’s next for you.

Summer is here and with it comes our favourite day of the year: graduation. This week, we got the chance to celebrate our students’ successes on a massive scale with one of our biggest ever graduation ceremonies. It took dozens of people dozens of hours of preparation to pull this off, but were able to award 119 people with a Bachelor of Arts in European Studies on Friday. We had even more graduates this year but they couldn’t all make it to the ceremony.

Space in our auditorium is limited so we had to plan everything very carefully and line up the graduates in a (mercifully air-conditioned) classroom in advance, but it was well worth the effort for this batch of young European Professionals.

We hope to be able to bring you stories about the jobs and master’s programmes that these folks are doing, sometime soon, so stay tuned. In the meantime, check the links in our bio for an idea of what European Studies graduates do.

They’re hanging up umbrellas at The Hague University of Applied Sciences and setting up the bar. This can only mean one thing: graduation season is about to start!

This Friday, European Studies is going to present 122 young professionals with a Bachelor of Arts degree, in what is sure to be a fun - if slightly exhausting - ceremony and we really can’t wait to see everyone on stage, where we’ll learn a little about the jobs and master’s programmes our graduates have lined up.

If you follow European Studies, you know that foreign languages are at the core of everything we do. Being challenging all of our students to learn French, German, Spanish or Dutch, we like to encourage all young people to do the same and just the other day, we got a unique opportunity to celebrate the successes of a new generation of language learners. We’ll let Claudia Bulnes tell you about it:

“What a wonderful afternoon celebrating the Spanish language! Last Friday, THUAS had the honour of welcoming Dutch secondary school students who received an Honourable Mention for their outstanding performance in the Dutch National Spanish Exam. Together with their families, teachers and representatives from the Embassies of Spain, Colombia, Uruguay, Cuba,Chile, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Peru, Mexico and Guatemala, we celebrated not only their achievements, but also the many opportunities that learning Spanish can open.As hosts, our European Studies programme was proud to show how students can continue their Spanish language journey at university while studying languages, politics, economics and culture in an international environment. A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this event such a success. And to all the award recipients: congratulations! 👏 We encourage you to keep learning Spanish and enjoying everything this beautiful language has to offer. ¡Enhorabuena!”

When it’s code red, none but the brave (or crazy) go to work.

Today was supposed to be the closing of our second-year Fundraising project. We had final Sprint Retrospectives (this project uses scrum project management) and we had planned on having a big closing ceremony - with prizes, in the aula, followed by some drinks to celebrate. Most of our second-year students will be on exchange next semester and won’t see us - or each other -for quite a while.

Alas, Mother Nature had other plans. With soaking temperaturen, The Dutch government called a code red and adviseur people to stay home, so we had to host our closing ceremony online, broadcasting from a mostly empty (but very air-conditioned) auditorium, together with a handful of students who were able to safely travel to school.

Student safety is our top priority so we couldn’t do it any other way, but we made the best of it and had a nice time together, and luckily we were able to livestream and interact with students at home. It wasn’t the party we planned, but we were still happy to do it.

In case you hadn’t noticed, it’s hot out. The Netherlands called a ‘code red’ for Friday, but that didn’t stop us from having a great Thursday and the tropical temperatures didn’t stop dozens of incoming students from coming, from far and wide, from visiting.

Today, The Hague University of Applied Sciences invited all of the students who will start this fall to come get to know us, our university and each other. We had a short presentation from some core teachers - including our intro week team - and did some competitive speed dating to get to know each other. We had to keep it short with this heat but we got to meet about a third of our incoming students, everybody had a great time and we can’t wait to see these folks again on 26 August.

What’s the best way to learn how to influence big decisions in the EU?

At European Studies, we aim to learn by doing. This week, our first-year students are simulating an EU policy negotiation using a real case. Reprinting different member states, our students are getting hands-on experience in diplomacy and public policy while discussing the future of electric cars.

While we don’t have classes anymore, it’s one of the busiest times of the year for students and staff at European Studies. Students in years 1 and 2 are doing their semester projects while students in year 4 finish the final stages needed to graduate on 10 July and teachers try to keep up with all of it. In theory, students in the third year are the exception, because they don’t have required activities right now, but some of them manage to keep busy anyway.

If you’ve followed this page a while, you might remember Andy, Bruno and Michaela. Last year, when they were in Year 2, they took over our instagram and took us all on a journey to Montenegro, because they had been chosen to participate in last year’s NATO Youth Summit. Now that they’re in Year 2, they could be taking it easy right now, but they’re not. They’re actually in Berlin this week after winning yet another NATO Student Challenge, earning an invitation to the NATO Allied Foresight Conference 2026.

This terrific trio will be at the conference all week, getting the chance to network with a wide range of different professionals, including some senior NATO officials. They’ll also be presenting their own ideas at the conference.

It’s great to see students pursue and succeed at extra-curricular opportunities, and to see students take what they’ve learned about international affairs at ES out into the real-world is always a thrill. Andy, Bruno and Michaela will be with us for one more year before graduating. Given their track record, what happens next is going to be interesting.
