The IBA ICC Moot Court Competition welcomes universities from all over the world for a large scale moot court simulating the proceedings of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The Competition consists of an extensive eight

-day educational and social program, which brings together students of diverse backgrounds and cultures to The Hague to challenge their skills as future international lawyers. The establishment of the ICC provided a fantastic opportunity to further support the rule of international law and the fight against impunity by garnering youth-led interest. The Competition involves collaboration with judges, professors, and other legal professionals. This network makes our Competition a realistic simulation of ICC proceedings. The Competitionโ€™s case addresses fundamental issues of substantive and procedural international criminal law.

Looking back: Semi-Final Rounds of the IBA ICC Moot 2026 โš–๏ธ

Today, we look back at the final stage of the knock-out rounds of this year's Competition, where nine out of ninety-four teams faced off for the chance to plead in the Final Round in Courtroom I of the International Criminal Court.

At our very own Leiden University, three courtrooms hosted the Semi-Finals. Bench members returned from the same reflecting on the outstanding advocacy they had witnessed. It was no easy decision, but a necessary one to determine which three teams would earn a spot in the Final Round.

Congratulations once again to all Semi-Finalists! Reaching this stage was a remarkable achievement, one to be very proud of.

We would like to extend our special thanks to our Presiding Judges:

๐Ÿ”ท Courtroom V: Judge Miatta Maria Samba (International Criminal Court);

๐Ÿ”ท Courtroom X: President Judge Graciela Gatti Santana (United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT));

๐Ÿ”ท Courtroom XII: Judge Alphons Orie (United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT)).

As well as to their fellow bench members:

๐Ÿ”ท Courtroom V: Co-founders of the Competition at the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies, Prof. Carsten Stahn & Prof. Michael Scharf;

๐Ÿ”ท Courtroom X: ICC Associate Legal Officer Farhaan Ahmed & Former Dean of Law Prof. Momodu Kassim-Momodu;

๐Ÿ”ท Courtroom XII: Member of our Case Drafting Committee, Prof. Milena Sterio & Lawyer Hala Bou Alwan.

Check out some memorable moments from our 2026 Semi-Final Rounds below, and stay tuned for more details about our 2027 edition in the coming months. We are already looking forward to it!
