WORD OF THE WEEK: LANGZAAM
One of my students said to me this week:
"I’m so slow. It takes me forever to make a sentence in Dutch."
But langzaam (slow) is not a bad thing, I told her.
In fact, practising slowly is often exactly what you need to eventually speak faster and more naturally.
First, you search for the words.
You find the right word order.
You say the sentence out loud a few times.
You listen to the rhythm and melody.
And then you try again.
Your brain is working hard in the background, recognising patterns and making new connections.
So if you need some time to make a sentence in Dutch: take that time.
Langzaam is ook vooruitgang.
Slow is progress too.
What you practise slowly and often enough will eventually start to come naturally. Step by step! You will get there.
Word of the week: LANGZAAM.
