Olympus English College of Rotterdam

The Olympus English College of Rotterdam was an independent international college (upper secondary school) at 27 Stampioendijk in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. It was founded in 1975 with about 240 students the first year. The school was bilingual, with a mixture of English and Dutch used depending on the course. It was transformed into Internationaal Gymnasium when it reached the threshold of 500 s

tudents. It had an international profile, with teaching staff members from the UK, USA, Australia and South Africa and gave students several options for international study trips and exchanges every year. It was the first school in the Netherlands to have its own pipe band. In the summer of 2001, after a short period of financial difficulties due to dwindling numbers of new students, the school was closed. The school building ( built in the mid-19th century ) was demolished as part of a neighbourhood renewal. During the process a residential area was built on the Stampioendijk and this relatively short road completely disappeared. A small plaque on a lawn where the school formerly stood commemorates the Olympus English College of Rotterdam.
