Research in Art & Design Education and Collective Practice
What is the significance of material practices and embodiment for artistic research and education? How can we develop an art-driven, interdisciplinary pedagogy within secondary education? What are the main challenges when it comes to forging transdisciplinary connections between the arts and sciences in education? What are the current developments with respect to art mediation in museums? How do pivotal topics like the climate crisis, intersectionality and decolonialization – influence our view on education in the future?

A learning community
We pay attention to contemporary developments in art and design education, considering it to be an expanded and interdisciplinary field that also includes socially engaged practices in art. The curriculum is designed for educators in the fields of secondary, vocational and higher arts and design education, educators in museums and community arts, as well as artists and designers with an interest in pedagogical practices. The course prepares graduates to engage with formal educational structures as well as with informal learning environments or collective practices. Peer learning and being part of a learning community is a key feature of our programme. 10/01/2024

As we’re starting a new year – and our 1st year students have formed a vibrant, warm and engaging new learning community – while we are plotting plans to plan an event with the ever-growing active community of alumni students, we thought it be apt to start of the year with a little throwback to our graduation event last summer: ‘Prompts for the Time Being’!

Immediate. Instantaneous. Precise. Punctual. Qualities connected to the word prompt, which points to a readiness and quickness to act as the occasion demands. When we are prompted to do something, our minds, hearts and bodies are simultaneously set in motion. For a fraction of a second, time is suspended: we are completely present for the action at hand.

By choosing ‘Prompts for the Time Being’ as the title of their collective presentation, the students of the 2023 Master of Education in Arts class at The Piet Zwart Institute voice their intention to co-host an inclusive space for open-ended, experiential learning. As you will see, hear and feel, these two days are all about trying things out, and letting the (unplanned) outcomes nurture a shared reflection. Whilst sharing specific readings, approaches and objectives across their practices, these creative educators each speak and act from a distinct position. We invite you to let their different worlds draw you in.
