Piet Zwart Institute, Master Interior Architecture: Research + Design MIARD

“How You’re Sitting + How I’m Sitting”, a project by Anna Bonomi and El Linds during Semester 1 at MIARD, and exhibited in December at .

This work will be part of ‘The Space does not Agree’ opening at .rotterdam tonight, February 6th.

In “How You’re Sitting + How I’m Sitting”, the misunderstanding gets reframed as essential to communication, rather than its failure. The experiment that led to this installation explored the limits of shared language in the transference between internet and external experience. Twenty emotional states were coded using alternative descriptive systems, then exchanged and decoded. The process revealed what we have been calling perception gaps (= spaces where the meaning slips or get lost) and showed how having a shared language only creates the illusion of understanding.
Perception gaps aren’t failures, they’re essential meeting places. The larger the gap, the more expansive the space for collaborative meaning-making and understanding.

Participants were invited to arrange the rugs as they wished to make their own seats on the floor, to be immersed in the audio that played dynamically through two speakers placed on either side of the rugs.

MIARD 2 finals last week for Spatial Lab led by Ali T As’ad.

We worked weekly since September developing forms of 2D representation through drawing, diagrams and other forms of image making. All of the work was collected resulting in a collective archive in the form of a book.

Using the same methods of analysis of space and representation, each student also developed an individual case study which was presented alongside the collective work. Have a look through to see what we made.

MIARD 2 midterms last week for Graduation Preparation Project w/ Ephraim & Mariana.

From field writing sessions at to hands-on design workshops back in the studio, the past days have been full of collaboration, conversation, and experimentation. As we prepare for the Open Day tomorrow, our studio is taking shape, ideas are becoming more and more tangible, and the space is starting to reflect the stories we’ve been working on together these past few weeks.

The week after holidays is never easy, but MIARD 1 did it beautifully, from discussions on the power of seeds and the Israeli Palestinian war, watching movies about plane hijackings and identity, and a lecture from the one and only , exploring sound and the importance of well crafted sound design.
